Foo - Broken bones

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have a broken kneecap. I will be wearing a brace to prevent my knee from moving about another 5 weeks. Then physical therapy will begin. That probably has me still on PT in Febuary. I have no idea when I can actually pedal. My left leg muscles are already a little smaller than the other side.
I know everyone is different, every injury is differrent, and that one person's recovery may not be anything like my recovery. In spite of all that, I would like to hear srories
about recovery from any broken bones. Related to bikes or not.
I will be sitting around doing nothing, so give me something interesting to read.
Anyone actually break a kneecap?
Good, bad, funny ,sarcastic, and even off subject information is OK with me. :)
Also what did you do when you could not ride, if that was the case?

You'll be up and going in no time. I rode 2 months after this happened. 1 week after I got out of a wheelchair. Perseverance and all that jazz.

2MB, considering the stuff you post about me and others in here, I am surprised this is the first time that someone has broken one of your knee caps.
Crackerjab, as usual, you have one upped Foo again. You win the broken bones contest.
I am 17th runner up in the funny bone contest.

Looking at those xrays, crackerjab, I can see that you have a screw loose.

Also, quit playing with the sticks and stones and stick to the name-calling.

I fell off my bike and crushed 4 ribs. Hurt to breathe. First time I sneezed I passed out from the pain. Learned to avoid sneezing at all costs.
About 3 days after the accident I'm driving the family over to some friend's house out in the relative country and we're listening to Car Talk on the radio. They are telling the story of this guy who tied a bunch of weather balloons to a lawn chair and took a flight up into LAX airspace. This guy had taken a rifle to shoot balloons so he could eventually return to ground. In the story they're telling this guy gets buzzed by an F-16 and drops the rifle and one of the radio guys says "I'll bet I can tell you what the next 2 words that came out of that guy's mouth were."
Well that comment makes me want to laugh. The radio guys just keep at it and I'm really wanting to laugh but know that it's gonna kill me if I do. I have to pull over on the shoulder of the road because I'm about to lose the battle and I fear I'll lose control of the car if I laugh. All this time my wife is getting really concerned because I must have been making these mewling sounds as I tried to control myself. It takes me a minute or so to gain enough control so I can explain to her what the problem was. But even after I thought I had control again that laugh was still there trying to get out. It would start bubbling up and WHAM! the pain would be right there.
Months later I heard a repeat of that show. Yeah, the story was funny but not all that funny. Go figure.

In February 1996, I had a problem with sticky cleats, could not unclip in time, and crashed over onto my left side, fracturing my left femoral neck.

Remind me never to get behind you in the TSA line at the airport!

Incidentally, I've flown 6 times in the past couple months and I don't set off the metal detectors. Titanium = non-ferrous = no metal detector problems.
Bad car crash. Lucky to be alive. No really.

I don't think anyone needed to see an x-ray to figure that out. Nice hardware by the way. Do you feel bionic?
Spiral compound fracture of the left leg below the knee when I was a child.
I was racing a friend on foot through a park. I was winning and looked back over my shoulder to either see how far back or to gloat. There was a young tree that had been staked down, but instead of staking the tree to the ground, it was staked to like a fence post. The wire/cable ran horizontally from the tree to the stake, instead of diagonally... I clotheslined myself. Somehow, the leg got squished between my body and the ground.
I crawled around the apartment like a three legged dog for a couple of days before my mom decided that maybe I wasn't goldbricking. Massive guilt trip when they showed the X-rays to us...
I broke my collarbone. It was a complete break that pushed the bone downward and in. It's still in that position but fused itself back together. Shortly afterward, I had to play guitar at The Carter Fold. Pain meds really screw with my playing, so I had to go the whole day with no meds. I did the entire show on a stool because i couldn't hold up a guitar. All while wearing a clavicle harness and trying not too move too suddenly. During one chord change, the bone shifted. It was all I could do to keep playing.
I talked to a young lady at the walmart this morning, we had seen each other at cvs yesterday and recognized each other.
Now I have a bone of my own. :)

I hope she sets it for you...
few months ago, fell off my bike onto my messenger bag, had a u-lock in it, broke my scapula and a few ribs, left lung started to fill up with fluid, carried bike home put it away called ambulance. Can't take a lot of pain killers because they interact with my epilepsy meds. still hurts.
I have a broken eye-socket, a left tib-fib, a few ribs from wrestling and such. cut of my right index finger and had it re-attached. and dont know if it counts but does anyone remember when i ripped off my right ear from hitting an iron trashcan face first.

2manybikes, next time you'll pay attention when Bailey tells you which brand of dog food he doesn't like, won't you? Remember, he can totally reach your knees!
;)
Get well soon, bro.

Wow! I feel like I got off easy compared to you. If my healing is slower or faster than you, it's really encouraging to hear how fast you recovered. Thanks.
Much thanks to all posters.

We almost lost CrackerJab. He is now missing fingers because of that accident. I am very grateful every single day that you are still here with us. Just the other day when I saw a helicoptor salesman, I laughed thinking about him and then I almost cried thinking about him.
Dang that was a mix of emotions all in like 16 seconds.

Learn how to play the BagPipes, drink lots of Scotch, or learn to play the Trombone. Why not drive everyone else nuts. My hands still hurt from my accident on August 10th, broken right hand, dislocated fingers on the left, soft tissue damage, don't know if i will ever ride a road bike again. Going to PT twice a week. Went off meds a week ago because got tired of being in a stupor. Cheer up, could be worse.
Oh, by the way, I have not broken my knee cap, however I did break someone elses knee cap.
