Folding Bikes - Shiny Moulton TSR-27 for Christmas

This Christmas, I wanted a new bike under the tree .. being single has some advantages with regards to fulfilling that request.. I decided to build something up from mostly parts that I already had in the garage.. I had a Moulton TSR frame in a color that didn't do it for me, but I had got it at a good price a couple of years ago..

I stripped the frame and sent it off to the local chrome shop to have it nickel plated and polished.. once I got it back, I knew this was going to be the base for my Christmas present.. I had a Kinetix Pro Dual drive wheel from an old Speed Pro ( I really like the SRAM Dual Drive and is my favorite wide range gearing solution).. laced up a 20h 100mm American Classic hub in a Kinetix rim for the front .. added VO Porteur bar (really comfortable with the leather grips) .. 9spd Shimano bar end shifter on the right.. 3spd Sturmey Archer on the left driving the SRAM Dual Drive hub..up front, a Sugino 48t non-ramped chainring .. NOS Suntour cranks and adjustable chainline Miche bb .. I've always liked the speed of Continental Grand Prix tires (and they were hanging from the rafters) .. the end result met all my expectations .. here it is on it's maiden voyage Christmas Eve.

Yep excellent rebuild, it certainly is a nice new shiny bike :D

Being married also has its advantages, as for my 50th last year my wife got me a nice new TSR2.

I then brought her a Pashley Princess this year for hers.

No new bikes for me - I'm at the current self imposed limit of three, however, wife had only two since her beach cruiser (a beautiful Blue, Giant Simple 7) was stolen from our garage last summer in Ventura, CA. She had a dream recently about a 'City Bike' with matching racks (and some pedals that don't really exist). Just happened to see a real version of it online (at Bikes Direct), and she decided she'd spend some of the money that had unexpectedly come into her hands for the bike.

Arrived in the Christmas rush via UPS in beautiful state. Did final assembly, greased and adjusted fasteners, and had to do minor truing of front wheel. She has only ridden it around the block for now - we have been out here on the coast most of the time - but she reports the 8-speed Nexus hub shifts really, really smoothly.

We will see if I can keep up with her on my cruiser.

Any other new bikes out there?

That bike is beautiful now! I really want a Moulton TSR myself! But I can see why you stripped the frame. I love pink, but that frame was a truly hideous color.

I'm hoping the wiping will be therapeutic :thumb: .. if not, it'll probably be one of those thankless chores someone has got to do :lol: ... so far, I've already sweated over a bunch of the tubes and am getting to really enjoy the shakedown rides ..

I never thought TSR and porteur bar would look good together but the result is truly inspired!

I have flipped a VO Porteur bar too. I wish it was a bit wider up front.

It's gone from looking like a bar of soap to. . . erm, not sure how to describe it other than it's awesome. If it were conscious it would have high self-esteem.

Another similar bar that I like is the SOMA 3 spd moustache bars .. they have a 505mm (60mm drop) and a 540mm (50mm drop) now.. I was going to use the 500mm SOMA (currently on my AM14) but had the 480mm VO Porteur on the shelf for far too long and had never run it.. so far I like it .. time will tell..

Haven't checked around here , others report plating costs,

I wanted a flatter albatross-type bar. To get more width up front, I put the brake levers on the outside ...

Those would be nice if they clamped around a 38mm seat tube, for sure.. so far, no chain drops.. I've been riding it everyday since I completed it.. roughly 10 miles/day over a variety of street surfaces.. the Sugino single speed chainring and the long chainstays probably help some... if I start experiencing drops, I can cob something up or just mount a dummy f/d at the braze-on..

the 'Chain Minder', being based on a hose clamp, gets pretty universal in tube fit.

Plated TSRs are absolutely beautiful! I found a pic of a chrome-plated TSR2 from Thailand, yesterday.
