Mountain Biking - Best tires?

Hello the trail.
This is a Dad needing some advise on tires for my daughter's mountain bike.
I am wanting to buy them for Christmas.
She is in need of new tires for her mountain bike, so I thought I would surprise her,
but I have not a clue as to what brand and type would be the best ( and coolest).She is an adult, so we are talking full meal deal tires as she does some serious mountain biking.
So, your suggestions are welcome.

What type of terrain and weather does she typically ride in? Tires get more specific than cars tires :)

Terrain is rocky and hills, I know sometimes she gets real muddy.

My favorite all-around tire is the Panaracer Fire Pro XC ( http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product.aspx?i=TI707A08 ). They're a solid, all-around performer with coloured sidewalls (black, red, yellow). They're fairly popular in Southern CA terrain (dry, hardpack conditions). See the prevous posters recommendation for comparing products at www.mtbr.com. The treads do "load" with sticky, clayey type of mud, but I think most tires do.

It's hard to make a recommendation without knowing the exact riding conditions. Perhaps call the local bike shop (LBS) and ask what they recommend for the specific area, especially if you know the trail or area she frequents.

BTW - if you do get the Panaracer Fire XC Pro, make sure you get the version with 127 thread per inch (tpi) casing (which are made in Japan). There is an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) version out there with 66 tpi (which are made in Taiwan). This was discussed on mtbr.com.

Michelin's All Mountain is a good choice, I use their XL S and that is a good all around too.

perhaps you should concider a gift certificate to a large online store like supergo.com, jensonusa, or pricepoint.com, or maybe your local bike shop so that she can pick out her own tires. tire selection is more personal taste than anything else, and being that you dont know very much about biking (and we know very little about her, her bike, her riding style, terrain, etc) the chances that you will get the correct tires is farily slim.
