What is the connection between bike riders and local coffee shops? I've been watching alot of mission workshop videos and other bike related videos and there has always been some reference to coffee shops.

those aren't coffee shops, those are espresso bars in high end boutique cycling stores. look up prestige amsterdam, bicycle store paris, etc... they all have their own espresso bar.

that or you're talking about the paris one where the dude goes to a coffee shop to browse velospace. i think that was just to show that he had the ideal trust fund existence. whatever.

Okay, so what is the connection between espresso drinkers and cycling stores?

I don't think there is a connection between bikes and coffee shops specifically. Millions of people who are not particularly connected with bicycle culture (if there is such a thing) frequent coffee shops on a regular basis. I prefer to brew my chock full o' nuts at home for a fraction of the price (and subsequently a fraction of the social interaction associated with those shops).

There is a stronger connection between suburban moms in SUVs and Chick Fil A. Basically because it's fast food (that they don't have to cook) that they don't feel guilty about feeding their children.

Everybody likes coffee, not just cyclists. It's a part of the daily routine of hundreds of millions of people throughout the world. Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world.

After oil, coffee is the second most valuable commodity in the world. More than 50 percent of Americans drink coffee everyday — three to four cups each, more than 330 million cups a day and counting....And, it's not just coffee. When you add in tea and caffeinated soft-drinks, more than 80 percent of Americans get their morning fix.

Sure I understand the love of coffee. Here in Boston, we have like 5 Dunkin Donuts on every single street.

But to me, the "urban" cyclist likes to go to local coffee shops and drink espresso and espresso based drinks. I feel like the if you are a "bike snob" you are also a "coffee snob".

Hipsters like coffee shops. Hipsters ride fixed gear bikes. It's really that simple.

I have the simple answer: coffee tastes good. Craft beer is the same way. Tons of craft beer in the cycling world. Half-Acre, Dogfish Head, Fat Tire (used to be craft...), Three Floyd's, Stone... They, among many others, all have teams and sponsor events.

It is just a simple observation I had when I walked by a local coffee shop, a lot of bikes out front. Starbucks which has a more cafe sitting area, rarely do I see any bikes out front.

face-****ing-palm. lots of people ride bikes. lots of people also, coincidentally, drink coffee. just so happens that you stumbled upon people that fall into both categories. I understand this, but to me there seems to be some underlining connection. I never see anyone's bike at dunkin donuts or starbucks...and they are the very popular coffee standard around here. Every time I walk by a local coffee shop there is always bikes out front, and a lot people inside with bike gear. That was one simple observation.

Then I was just looking at some videos online today of mission workshop and alot of their videos...have coffee shops or these espresso bars. Then I was watching a video on a TiGr lock, and introduction video, it says " lock up your bike and visit your favorite coffee shop and not have to worry".

Sure coffee is very popular, but when I watch a video on someone riding a scooter or show casing cool new shoes, never do I see them chilling at a coffee shop or heading towards one. I see no connection between a cyclist and franchise coffee places, but I do see one between a cyclist and a local coffee shop. Maybe it was a coincidence I stumbled upon a bunch of different videos that both had bikes and coffee, why haven't I stumble upon any videos of bikes and chocolate?

I guess us cyclists on this site are too cool for that and build bikes for bar crawling instead... although you got me thinking it would make sense they'd be going to the local shops, probably more tolerant of gear/locking up out front I'd think and friendlier too boot.

Personally, I would like to see what the correlation is with FG riders and 70% (and higher) chocolate.

Correlation does not equal causation.

As Minchin said, praying before a sporting event and winning does not mean that god took time out from torturing and killing babies in Africa to ensure your team's win.

I also like to enjoy coffee when I am walking, driving, or riding a non fixed gear bicycle.

I prefer dark chocolate for it's richer flavour and higher kick and it does seem that many of the cyclists I know and associate with also prefer dark chocolate, especially when it is organic and fair trade.

I was diagnosed as "hyperactive" at age 3 and my parents began feeding me coffee three times a day, and at 4 years old they bought me my first bike. I just figured they went together....

BTW: Chocolate is best experienced at body temperature, so let it melt and savor it, don't just bite off a piece and swallow it.

Yeah, they are pretty much hipsters. I actually walked into a local coffee shop today and most of the people in there were hipsters.

Just watching a bunch of different videos regarding bikes and seeing coffee shops references in it somewhere like a cheap plug in a movie made me wonder the connection.

Mission Workshop shares a building with Bicycle Coffee Co. Probably explains a bit of it.

Otherwise, the coffee shop is a symbol of urban living.

Everyone knows that coffee is a universal solvent. FG riders are anal about keeping their chains clean. Therefore, it's good to have coffee around to clean your chain at a moment's notice.

Personally, this is a more common sight for me:

In Italy, even the rest stops on the Autostrada have better coffee than Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts. Unfortunately, it's not really possible to ride a bike to one.

If you need to draw a connection, it's probably just liking things that are cool. Or at least things that are not the mainstream. Generally speaking, you local coffee place is going to have better/fancier coffee than Dunkin Donuts. That's just true. And these same people with slightly more sophisticated tastes also enjoy other things that are just enough off the beaten path to be considered cool. Biking would fit that profile.

Or ****in' hipsters. You pick.

In my area, the roadies are the ones filling the coffee shops on the weekend rides.

In my area, the only ssfg I see are dummies walking their bikes down the sidewalk and the brakeless retentionless fools.

Also, I've been drinking coffee/espresso before I bought a road bike, let alone a fixed gear. Maybe I'm just a hipster or I drink coffee like most people.
