Mountain Biking - I decided to go for crankbros products, need opinions

I think im gonna go for some crank brothers pedal, i have not yet decided which though im leaning toward the Egg Beater S. THis will be my first set of clipless so im wondering if anybody can tell me about their expiriences with this or another egg beater pedal. One thing that conerns me a little bit is how small the contact area is, does that hurt your foot after long rides?

i have eggbeaters the stainless ones, and they never hurt my feet when i ride....they are easy to clip into, and out of, they are strong too....and they shed mud, snow and anything else you get stuck on your cleats really well....even though the contact area is very small, probably like 2 square inches...after like a day its almost natural for your fott to put the cleat right into it...i love mine, and i definatley tell you to get a pair...

Crank Brothers has models of Eggbeater pedals with platforms. If you're concerned, purchase one of those.

i may do that, someimtesi will ride unclipped becuase you know wearing the shoes to go 1mile down the raod doesn't appeal to me. Any opinions on hte Candy then?

I enjoy my candy C pedals. I've always used spd's but I wanted to try out eggbeaters. good stuff. get them.

Just to be clear, SPD and egg beaters use different cleats right? So you can't use SPD shoes with Crank Bros stuff?

Different cleats, yes. But most mtb cleats are SPD shoe compatible. SPD simply refers to the bolt pattern on the sole. Eggbeater cleats will mount on SPD mountain shoes.
I have 3 sets of Eggbeater S's. Great pedals.

For what its worth I've ridden three centuries on Eggbeater S's with no problems as far as hotspots or numbness. I do have Mallet C's on my mountainbike however and the extra platform does seem to give you more leverage/support when you mash.

Eggbeaters are all around sweet pedals- easy in and out, good in mud, very solid, feel like time pedals, and, the best part is the weight. However, my lbs said the '02 models failed conistently after perhaps a year or two of hard riding. Indeed, I was just riding along (I am an XC rider, not much crashing) and my foot suddenly slipped off the spindle, pedal still attached to the cleat. luckily, I was a month a way from warranty ending, and I got a new pair of '03 egg beaters. Sweet. They haven't failed yet. If you want longevity, go with the heavier Time ATAC pedals.
