Mountain Biking - The new Kona Splice 29er

Howdy Gurus:

I realize this is a new model, but do any of you have any input on the Kona Slice bike?

I've been looking for a nice, cushy mountain bike to help get my fat ass back into shape and not break the bank at the same time.

My LBS let me cruise one around today, and I loved it. I like the upright position (compared to my road bike), smooth shifting, ride and looks.

Besides that, I know nothing about the company, model or components.

Any thoughts on the model or?

I live in an area with mucho hills and dirt trails, so I've ruled out the hybrids.

Well heck. I pulled the trigger on a new Kona Splice today.

Hopefully it works out (I think it will). :)

Congrats on the new ride! Kona is a straight-up noice company. You can't go wrong there. Keep an eye on how everything is shifting / feeling and it will last a long time. Keep it tuned up via your LBS. Learn how to turn a wrench on it for fun. (it will help you on the trail if you break down)

Man, there is nothing like a freshy. :)

I parked the new Kona by my mug for an hour and enjoyed the new bike visual while taking in the smells of fresh grease, oil and rubber. Ahhhhhhhhhhh! Nothin' like it.

10-4 on keeping it tuned up and learning the mechanics of the new ride. There is nothing worse than being the dude that ruins a ride for everyone, due to pure ignorance.

So far, so good with this one.

I've put ~30 miles on my Splice over the past few days. That's actually a ton of miles for my fat ass, considering that I have not been on a bicycle since ~ 1989. :)

The bike is still shifting smooth as a supermodel's backside and is fun to ride.

On a bummer note, the Specialized Speedzone "Sport" computer I bought will not work with the bike. It seems the wheel magnet and sensor do not come close enough together, and/or the line of sight between the sensor and handlebar reception unit is blocked by the flare in the forks.

It's looking like a Garmin 200 might be in order.

The Garmin is a great unit. If you aren't actually looking for an excuse to buy one, try putting a shim underneath the sensor on the fork to move it closer to the magnet. Also, turn the magnet to move it closer to the sensor.

Or buy the Garmin.
