Mountain Biking - dirt jumpers

im looking at grabbing a dirt jumper and i was wondering if it is ok if i dont slam the seat and i keep it normal height,so i can pedal while seated at times?

Thats fine for riding, just lower the seat before doing jumps because otherwise theres a big possibility of your baby makers getting broken. Happened to a kid i went to high school with, he's only got 1 now, messed up.

im just trying to decide,cause as bad as this sounds i found a jumper at walmart with rear disc for 150 and i like how it looks alot.. i would use to it to just thrash on and mess around basicly a low money temp solution to see if i like it

I used to DJ on a BMX in highschool and never dropped my seat all the way then. In fact, none of us did. I think it's a MTBer thing. You don't want it up at normal pedaling height, but don't need it completely dropped either.

As for the walmart bike, you may as well just eat your $150. At least then maybe you'll get some nutrition out of it. The bike is going to be worthless. Walmart bikes are not made to be jumped, even if they're designed to look like a real DJ bike.

What the heck kind of dirt jumper did you find at Walmart for $150? Post it up, because I think you may not be looking at a jump-worthy bike.

Instead of buying a $150 bike from Walmart. I would suggest that you purchase a BMX chromoly steel frame from 2 Hip clearance, and start building a quality BMX bike that can be jumped. After a period of time, you'll have a quality bike that can be jumped!

OTOH you can just save your cash and wait until you can afford a decent DJ bike from either Haro or Norcal. You can get the Haro Steel Reserve 1.1 for $545, or the 1.2 for $765.

Will almost certainly be cheaper to buy a complete than build up a frame, and the fact that the OP was looking at Walmart bikes tells me that building this first bike might not be the best option. A BMX bike is an option, though I'd caution the OP to look for a full-chromoly frame. Also, BMX sizing goes by TT length, so a bike that's labelled "20.5" has a top tube that's 20.5 inches long.

If you have a BMX with decent parts and don't plan on riding it anymore, sell that and you've got at least $100(I would guess?) more to spend on a DJ MTB.

I don't think MTB DJ is really all that different than BMX DJ, though. Maybe a trail oriented MTB would be the route to go if you're tired of/bored with BMX DJ?

Damn, Hyper is in Walmart too now, huh? I hate to break it to you, but chances are it's not a real Hyper, just like Walmart Mongoose bikes aren't actually real Mongoose bikes. In all honesty, as far as Walmart bikes go, that one doesn't look that bad. Last time I was in Walmart, I'm pretty sure the bikes there didn't have 3-piece cranks with microdrive. But a 24" bike at Walmart doesn't really scream 24" DJ (or 4x bike like the top tube claims) to me...it screams kids' bike. I'm pretty sure that will be a death trap if you try to jump it, and even if you don't, that fork will be a pogo stick. Stick with the BMX until you have enough money, then look for a DMR Drone or NS Holy. Those are actual 24" dirt jumpers, and the rigid fork will be lightyears better than whatever is on that thing.

The Komodo will dirt jump much better better than any trail bike, & is highly recommended by people who put bikes through much more abuse than I do (albeit with a nicer fork). If you ride bikes for fashion, I think you're in the wrong sub-forum:thumb:

Then the komodo is exactly what you need it's a very versatile bike. That wally world dj bike doesn't conjure up a whole lot of confidence. Geometry on it is a complete joke. Stays that long on a 24 inch wheel bike are just not needed and that wheel looks to be slammed.

Stem is sketchy as all get out and the fork looks like it could fold in on itself if you land nose heavy. Brake setup is backwards if you are running a v brake and a disc brake, then it should be disc front, v rear. Also given the fact that the schrader valvestem on the front has that notorious single wall crookedness to it, I'm willing to bet it has single wall rims. Save up and get something much more credible.

I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything, but it seems goofy to me that you're willing to risk your well-being on a sketchy Wally World bike that only looks like a DJ from a distance, but you laugh at the idea of riding a bike that really is good for DJing, but looks a little more like a trail bike. And so your counter is to get a non-DJing trail bike from craigslist? Nothing about that makes any sense to me.

Seriously though, I know it's not the best looking frame, though I swear it does look slightly better in person than it does in pictures (and it looks a lot better than the Hyper). Depending on what kind of fork you put on there, it can make a pretty good DJ or a damn good trail bike. Craigslist is always an option, but you have to know what to look for, and the fact that your first choice was a Walmart bike doesn't inspire a whole lot of confidence.

im well aware of what to look for i work for a bike shop im just new to the whole dirt scene and am extremely cheap on bikes aside from my road bike

Dirt Jumpers need to be durable and there is a price to be paid to get something durable.

The Komodo is the best bike for the coin. I've been beating the pizz outta mine for 4-5yrs now. It's not the rifled top tubed new style frame, but I wish it were. That thang is schweet, man. Ugly? Meh. You're going to be straddling it, sitting your butt down on it and mashing, running it into rocks and trees...who da crap cares if it doesn't have carbon weave pinky-in-the-air roadie lines.

It's mountain biking...the skankier, the better:lol:

your komodo is sexy ed,the new style is ok but not as attractive but i def can not fit a 14in frame.

Mine's treating me well. I'll jump on the picture bandwagon here with a non-drive side shot with the saddle all up high and roadie-like. This is the 14 inch frame, btw.

If you're using it as a DJ, I wouldn't put a fork with that much travel on it though.
