Mountain Biking - Some observations from a 1st time non Marzocchi user.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I've had the time to ponder this now. Finally made some observations.

1) I have found that the Psylo I'm running right now feels alot more nimble than the Z1. Between the 80mm and the 125mm settings it just steers alot quicker, which I really like.

2)Despite being a little bit more narrower than the 2004 Z1, my psylo can fit a bigger tire on it than I could with the Z1. On the Z1, a 26x2.5 michelin fit in the Z1 by a very small bit. With the psylo, it makes the comp 24.1 I run on front look like a small xc tire.

3)Adjustment: The 2004 Z1 has no travel Adjustment. I have 80-125mm of travel with the Psylo, well worth the sacrifice of 5 mm of travel.

4)My psylo is a lot stiffer than the Z1 I had on it.

5)The ride height difference is astounding. The Z1 was a "little" too high for me.

6)The weight difference is really noticeable. It used to be a little bit tricky to get the front wheel off the ground due to the weight of the Z1.

7)Can finally run a regular old fender again when it's really muddy out. Don't have to use that PITA integrated fender anymore that has to be attached on by bolts.

I still like my Z1, it just did not feel right on the hardtail for me.

psylo is a nice fork, im very fond of rock shox stuff

Rock Shox have got a pretty bad rep built up over the last couple of Years, last year it seemed like Marz was ahead of them, thisyear people think Manitou are better aswell... i spose this shows that Rockshox are still producing some nice forks!

I think for fr in general marz is still on top. Manitou and rockshox are starting to catch up. Its good for pricing thats for sure

Hey you know Kidafa, who just got the new 'goose. He had a RS pro Delux shock on his old bike. It wasn't the best but it did it's job and had beenthrough a bit without blowing ie accidently flatlanding 17ft. He is wanting to sell it, hey if you don't mind paying for shipping from Adelaide Australia he may sell it to you.

RockShox are good if your wallet isn't, but for best quality, go with FoxForx

No one's going to want to buy it unless they know the eye-to-eye length.

Oh and you might want to try cleaning it and taking new photos. Currently looks like it hasn't been looked after.

But do you want your seals pissing oil? Two years ago, my sid exploded on me and it was pissing oil everywhere on the trail.

Do you think that the quality has gone up from a few years ago?

Dannihilator

How long was the sid going before blowing the seals?

I've seen more fox forks with blown seals than rock shox.

It's amazing what a little maintenace will do for the longevity of a fork.

Hey, kona, why'd you switch out the z1? I've not been here often for the past days and the last thing I knew is probably when you got your new helmet. Also, isn't the z1 6 inches? Doesn't that void the frame warranty?

The 2004 Z1 I swapped out is 130 mm in travel which is a little over 5". I wanted a lighter, and more adjustable(Travel Wise) fork.

Kidafa the shock was old and seals wear after a certain length of time. That wasn't my fault. And I clean my shock in soapy water like the manual says, i doubt you've ever even cleaned yours properly.

I am also not saying that it hasn't been looked after but it looks that way from the pictures, but if you want it to look that way, fine, no one is going to be interested.

Not like I was riding it fast? I'll ride as fast as i want and obviously it was fast enough to blow a Fox Shock.

THREAD JACKKKKKKKK

Anyways, you said that the psylo felt stiffer then the Z1. Were you running 20mm on both of them?

i too am a fan of the psylo. when i bought my stumpjumper it came with a manitou black super which i think sucks so i put a 2001 psylo that i upgraded to uturn and it did the trick. and i'm sure folkk have seen my hardrock pro with the psylo race. recently i switched the psylo out with the fox talas on the stumpy.

I had a 2001 Psylo with the Tullio through axle. I liked it, however the bushing wore out pretty quickly. I then switched to my Z1. I felt the Z1 (with through axle) was noticibly stiffer compared to the Psylo (with worn bushings). I think that out of the box stiffness is equal, however, Marzocchi's tend to be better long term. Rock Shox has improved their reliability, but it's still not on par with Marzocchi (IMHO).

Feature wise, I never had any problems with my Psylo's. I'd consider a newer one if the price were right.

Jenson has a Psylo XC for $289, Beyondbikes has a Psylo SL for $329, supergo has a Psylo Race for $309.99.

the 2004 and older z1s are all about 5"... the 2005 z1s are 6".

shall we rename the thread Kidafa vs. anthonaut?!?!

Psylos look nice, but I've never ridden them and most reviews on the net talk about strength being an issue? I am vaguely considering them as a future upgrade, you don't make them sound weak!

anyway, glad you like them

Sorry for the hi-jack Kona.
