Foo - My Nipples are Hard

Brr.... It is so cold in this house. The heater goes "hmmmmmm" but no hot air comes out the vents. Called the landlord twice and haven't heard back. Who knows when the last time we had heat was. I turned it way down when I left for work at 7am and when I got home at 5:30pm it wouldn't work. :cry:

have you tried lighting the pilot light?

edit: i guess i should first ask if the pilot light is lit...

The side of the furnace says "Automatic ignitor. Do not attempt to light pilot."

Make sure the auto-ignitor is lit. It needs a source of fire to light the pilot light. It's not like it can just magically pull fire from the æther.

How long has it been since your automatic ignitor was cleaned? I used to have to bring someone in yearly to clean mine so that it would fire up. You could try turning the main power switch off, then on again. That will reset the system.

How long has it been since you changed the filters. Could be that the poor thing just can't move any air due to clogged filters.

All of this is the landlord's responsibility. It is even outlined in the lease that the landlord is responsible for changing furnace filters and such.

I'm not crawling down into that crawlspace again. It gives me the heebie jeebies. I called and left another message with the landlord. He will fix it, I'm sure. Hopefully before it gets really cold again...

How proactive is the landlord? Perhaps you might want to come up with a maintenance calendar and send him messages when things are due to be serviced. Depending on the quality of the filter and the location of the filter, they may need to be changed every 30 days. It may be his responsibilty, but you can assist in the process to insure that things are done and that your vital services stay in good working order. Seems to me it would be a win / win situation.

Unfortunately, Colorado law doesn't allow that. I still have to pay full rent or face potential eviction. What I'm going to have to do, send the landlord a letter notifying him of the breach of warranty of habitability and wait.

I'm hoping the landlord is just on vacation.
