Classic & Vintage - My Peugeot PY10 has a famous previous owner.

As i'm waiting to collect my Peugeot PY10 i thought i would email the seller to see if he knew any history about the bike. He told me the bike has been ridden up the col du tourmalet many times and he bought the bike from Guy Lapebie.
Guy Lapebie was a French professional cyclist who won two gold medals at the 1936 olympics in Berlin!

Anybody else got any cool stories from previous owners?

I owned one bicycle, a Canadian made Peugeot fitted with Campy NR components, that was supposed to have been one of Kurt Harnett's training bikes. Though I did try to verify the pedigree, I could not do so. Sadly, this meant that the bike was just another Canadian made Peugeot. Kurt H won two Olympic cycling medals, in case his name is not known here.

I even tried to contact Kurt H but he never responded. He is probably trying to contact me as I type:-(

While not really what I would consider famous, Bob Beal (http://vintagefuji.posterous.com/1984-fuji-professional-super-record) was well known around New England and had a race named after him. I certainly like the history around my Fuji Pro SR.

Also in the collection is Gene Ritvo's personal Professional. For those who did not know, Gene was a major distributor for Fuji in the US and had a hand in spec'ing many of the bikes sold in the states. Scott kindly assisted this bike into my collection a bit over a year ago, after he found out about Gene's bicycle estate being sold. Perhaps Scott will share his Austro Daimler catalog bike.

I have one Marinoni and one Gianella that were ridden by a reigning national champion, one GT that won a national ATB championship and one Softride that won a national triathlon championship.

Edit: Forgot to mention that the Gianella was also ridden at the World's Championships.

All right, I'll bite. I can't say that I own any famous bikes, but I've worked on a few:

Remember this turn-of-the-century machine I spoke about in early 2011? It was at one of the local shipyards - where Starz Entertainment had set up a local studio for their upcoming drama, Magic City; set in 1959 Miami. I was called in to service the fleet of around 13-14 bikes, including the following:

A 1958 Schwinn Jaguar 3-speed in Flamboyant Green; absolutely mint, and my favorite rider of the bikes there - went bombing all around the shipyard with it at top speed. This so happened to be necessary - the Sturmey hub was gummed up solid and needed a quick workout.
A 1957 Schwinn Jaguar Mk II in black; again, a 3-speed. The Sturmey cable gave me fits inside the tank - the fulcrum sleeve was sitting right in front of a tank brace. I had to replace the cable. (P.S. to Neal Lerner: The '51 Raleigh's shifter cable is going to be a celebrity - because I had to pull the '60s-era cable off of that bike for the Jaguar. Gives me an excuse to put a proper '50s shifter cable on it).
A 1962 Schwinn Debutante - shown at the left of the early frame, below. (Sorry, but you're looking at the only overall photo that I have of this).
A 1962 Schwinn Corvette, Flamboyant Red with a 2-speed Bendix kick-back - my first time on a kick-back, and I was rather pleased with it.
A mid-1950's ladies' Huffy ballooner that was falling apart, but ridable (with a loose chainguard bracket).
One 1964+, ladies' J.C. Higgins Spaceliner. Chromed Wal-Mart crap from the 1960's.
And the last of the adult bikes, a disastrous 1973 Columbia Tourist III which I flatly refused to fix - both on the grounds that it was junk, and that it wasn't period correct.

Three small balloon-tire 20" Schwinns were present as well, plus two in the 24" wheel size. I forgot what they were.

The room with this bike was filled with period room-service carts with mint Kirby vacuum cleaners on them. Lots of period luggage too. The two propmen who were with me were hand-painting picket signs with One-Shot enamel. Not far away was a second, huge prop room full of period chairs, tables, and - of all things - a Scorpitone (remember the thread about Alex Marco's "The Bike?"). A completely rusted-out 1959 Cadillac Fleetwood and fiberglass body panels for a '57 T-Bird were also present.

Unfortunately, the trailer for Magic City doesn't show any bikes, but it does give you a look at some of the props that I saw in the department, plus the hand-painted signs. Watch quickly, and you'll see why they needed the fiberglass '57 T-Bird:

Not owner but builder. Gösta "Fåglum" Pettersson won Giro d´Italia 1971 amongst many other pro races. He was one of three brothers and a related (a four-piece band of brothers) whom startled the italians and Merckx during late 60´s and 709´s. Gösta rode for MCB (Monark/Crescent Bolagen) and included in his pro deal were to have his own bike shop after the career. MCB would supply parts and he and his brothers would to build high-end bikes. Bikes built by the Petterssons were labeled of course. Mine´s from 1973. The shop is still going in Vårgårda, Sweden. (...I was unhappy with Göstas choice of french components, nowadays I run a 600 group :innocent:)

my Pogliaghi Pista was originally purchased from the Pog shop by Eddie Salas
an Australian pro and Olympic rider. While he didn't medal in track he did ride
it in the Olympics.

I met Kurt Harnett when I was a teenager he was one of the first international cyclist I ever met he was also one of the nicest persons. I was always in awe of his legs had the biggest calves I had ever seen. I rode with him or tried to ride with him and always attended his races whenever he visited my island. Really cool Cat always gave me a cool momento.

Don't like MAFAC brakes, Ideale saddles and Atom pedals? I must say I adore all three on my orange Crescent from 1971. Well, perhaps those pedals are a bit of a PITA to work with... I believe mine was build by Gösta "Fåglum", too, or must it specifically have that label?

My Raleigh Super Course TT came from the same bike shop as the bike belonging somebody ( I forget his name ) who once competed against a very famous racer (whose name escapes me) and lost. :)

So the legend has it. Gösta & co didnt build all 320´s, 319´s or 318´s - several still came from Varberg. But then again, decals fall off...

where did all the race bikes go?

Most teams had 10 riders, a bike per rider per year and yet we cant find any?

The closest I have is an 1987 fanini alan super record with a brazeon for a race number, which came from roubaix....

I had one off the 1987 7/11 bike for quite a few years. The Centurion I painted as a 7/11 was an exact copy of it.

For those of you who may not know, Barbara was the Senior Women's US National Road Champion in 1978 (Milwaukee, WI).

As an interesting aside, I used to train a little with the Harrison girls - Nell and Joella - in AZ in the early 80s. Joella was Midget Girls runner-up in 1981 but used to train/race in her US Nationals Stars and Stripes jersey in 1982. I think she won the Intermediate title that year, but can find no details online to support that. And if my memory is not failing me, I believe Nell also used to train/race in a S&S jersey, too. This was back in the day when those jerseys weren't exactly hanging off the rack in every bike shop if you get my drift.
