BMX - Loose Grips

I bot some grips and used windex to slide them on, however after a week, the grips were not tight enough. So i took them out, and put some electric tape around the handlebars. Now i put the grips on, with windex, the left grip seems tight enough, but i think i put a bit too much windex on the right, and its loose (its been abt a week since i did this) I tried using a computer air duster to dry it out, it works, but it gets loose again. Any suggestions?

Hair spray slides right on then sticks like glue.

use grip glue. its this stuff that is for motercycles, and it works better that any thing.

OK hairspray, do u guys all concur? Grip glue, my bike shop doesnt have it, but what if u have to remove the grips again? do i have to ruin the grips? I dont think WD40 is a good idea, cuz its oil, and its gonna be loose forever

most motorcycle stores carry grip glue, and no you can get the grips off by spraying a little water inside the grip, and they slide off pretty easy.

i dont kno any motorcycle stores near my area (in the bronx)

you could always get lock on grips.

Okay...

1. Do not use any SOAP based product, like Windex. When it dries out it seems fine, but when it gets wet from your sweat, then it loosens up forever.

2. Do not use any TEFLON based lubricants, as these will never tighten.

3. USE: Grip glue, which works well but you likely will have to cut your grip off to remove it.

4. USE: Hairspray, but watch out as some leave a film that acts exactly like Windex so sometimes your grips come loose again after some riding.

5. USE: WD-40!!! WD-40 is water based and evaporates after installation. Just a little bit is necessary to slide your grip on and if you leave it overnight it should be perfect in the AM. I have done this for years with no problems at all. It is in my toolbox and is quick and easy to use. You can use it to take your grips off, and to put your grips back on.

6. DO NOT USE ELECTRICAL TAPE! It gunks up your bars.

I have used grip glue.. you can order it from dans... it works well.. yea you have to cut your grips off, but why would you want to remove your grips before they wore out.. I dont get this..

i like my front brake on my right (rear on my left). If for some reason the brake levers break or i want to switch the left and right, i would have to take off the grips. Plus my brake cables are getting old. THANKS BMXTRIX!!

that's not too good of a reason.. I have had my brake lever for about 5 pairs of grips now.. I would just use the glue and not worry about your brake lever and most brake levers have a clamp, they dont slide off, so its nothing to worry about..

WD-40. Always. It dries in less than ten seconds.

I just put some WD40, and i think its working...As for the brake lever thing, It does have clamps, and it uses a hex allen wrench to loosen. After that you still need to take off the grips, in order to take the levers off.

i wrap my bars in masking tape then spray hair spray on the tape, and it dries in like 3 seconds, so yoo have to do it fast but it always works.

I don't know anyone who uses WD-40 who has a problem. This is the way that about half the pros do it... why? Because it works.

Just a tiny bit is all that is needed to get grips on, then they WILL come off if necessary. You don't need to find or carry around extra crap to get your GRIPS on and off. WD-40 is just a standard toolbox item that you should always have. (spray paint? hair spray?) It's just right there, quick, and works the way it should.

Actually the BEST way to put grips on and to take them off is with a air compressor and shooting air under the grip to lift it on and off. Those aren't to convenient to carry in your tool bag either.

thanks guys, wd40 is the winner. you can buy those air duster cans, and shoot air into the grips. looks professional, but u cna use it to take off the grips, or put them on

I don't travel around so I don't have a giant tool box I take with me. I have a small tool box that holds all my bike stuff, minus a pump and a hammer.

I put my grips on with spray paint, then usually shoe goo the ends because I don't use bar ends. I've never had to put grips on while out on the road or whatever. i have TON's of cans of spray paint.....

use hair spray or CRC they both work very well

I used (now ODI hex collar grips) hockey tape and pvc pipe glue.
Swab the inside\side that to goes first on the bar. Have a cloth handy- it mostly gets pushed out.
Cloth tape grabs with the glue, a turned grip can be a chest injury in mtb'ng.

re used grips blabla. Use if nec. Gross to unwind the tape tho-.

Use Aquanet and party like it's 1989. When it's wet the grips slide on, when it dries it's like glue. To get the grip off just spray some under the grip and they slide right off.

use sorn oil nothing happens to your bars and dries in like 20 minutes if you keep your bar ends off

yea go for it, but personally i tried the WD40 and it rocks, but make sure u dont spray it on the outside of the grip lol

He, reminds me of when I had dried spray paint on my grips and tried to clean it off with gasoline.

Go to any golf shop and get some grip tape. it's like 2-sided masking tape. clean your bars, put it on, and peel the backing off. The put some paint thinner in your grip, shake it around, and pour it over the tape so it's wet. Quickly slide the grip on and after it dries, that mother won't move.

I do like the WD40 trick tho...

used wd-40 for past 15 years works well. now use s+m odi lock ons could never use regular grips again, but i do live in u.k rains alot

i just soak the grips in realy hot water then put them on it woks fine 4 me

I use hairspray when working on bikes that don't belong to me. Slip a spoke under the grip, give it a spray, and twist the grips off. A bit inside before installation and they slide right on. I bought 14 sets of ODI lock-on's, so I don't worry about my own bikes. Back in the day (early 1980's) Gorilla Snot was the hot product for keeping BMX grips on.

just clean off the bars, and the inside of the grips. then just put some water in the grips and slide them on and let them dry. best to put them on at night so they would dry over night.
