I was looking at CL ads last night and up pops an ad for an old Trek 970. The ad stated that it needed some work, but if you wanted it you could have it. I emailed the guy and went and picked it up today. It's a bit large for me, but I took it anyway since he was just wanting it out of his garage. There was a brand new Kona mountain bike handlebar, a new set of grips, new cables and a brand new, in the package Sram 8 speed chain in the box of parts. Heck I would have driven to his house for the free chain.

The bike is a little rough, but I can get it going again for very little money. Not sure what I'll do with it yet, but it was free, so, I'm not worried about it. Most of the time CL is pretty lame in my area, but it worked out today.

Way to go! I have a Trek 950 (one step down) and it is a great bike!

I've got a 1989 Trek 950, all original. It was my first mountain bike. I learned a lot riding a lugged steel hardtail with horizontal top tube!

I can't decide if I should put it up for sale because I'm cramped for space, or keep the frame for touring.

Congrats! I emailed on that one too. I used to have a '91 Trek 990 that I loved, but it was just too small.

Nice find. I was given a similar Trek 900 (sans wheels & seatpost) via Freecycle about 3 years ago. Got it back on the road this past summer. Makes a wonderful utility bike and I have a padded rack trunk to tote my camera. I had a Gary fisher Wahoo that I bought 10 years ago and could never get comfortable on it, but this Steel Trek is perfect. The G.F. has now become a source of parts to fix other bikes.

No matter how beat it may look, it will ride beautifully. That was just one notch from the top of the line. What year? Pics?
My first real MTB was a 1989 950.
