Doe's anyone here know where to find brake hoods for standard older Dia-Compe type brake levers at a cheap price? I just can't see why these pieces of simple rubber should cost nearly $15-20 even with shipping.
Also I have a couple of sets of nice Mafac in my parts bin that need hoods.

that is just the going rate. they are not produced anymore so when they are gone they are gone. try buying Campi's early aero hoods $50+

I've routinely bought the dia-compe ones from ebay recently for ~10 shipped.

So any idea where I could even get Mafac hoods without buying NOS levers for a $100 plus.
Yep, Vintage NOS hoods are getting pricey and harder to find.

Let me look around today.
I think I have some extra Dia-Compe and Mafac levers with decent hoods.

Well I quess most of my builds will go hoodless with a partial wrap around.

Cane Creek/DiaCompe/Weinmann hoods are $7.99 at Niagara. (http://www.niagaracycle.com/product_info.php?products_id=1573)
Decent Mafac hoods will cost you your first-born - if you can get them. (That's why my '71 PX-10 has Weinmanns on it.)

I have a pair of non-aero Dia-Compe "white" hoods.
Need to be cleaned, with one small tear.
If you want them, pm me.
I think I'll keep my extra Mafac and Campy levers around after looking at the prices on ebay.

Hoods are seriously perishable and getting harder and harder to find, hence the higher prices. With this in mind, I started tucking hoods away a while ago, and now have quite a few sets, most of which I doubt I will ever use...

And hoods are one of those things I rarely offer for sale. I know how hard originals are to find and they are becoming even harder to find. With that in mind, I hang on to what I have.
I do purchase aftermarket hoods for my Universal and Campy Record builds. And, for what it is worth, the quality is not bad but there are still not original. This Universal hood is one of those I purchased from RW, a fellow who makes complete sets, including the little black hoods over the cable adjusters...

Wow Randy!
Smart decision.
I have a local source for nos Campy hoods, but I've been asked to keep my big mouth shut by him.
Yours are beauties though. Would you mind pm'ing a source for repros?
I have to stop using these originals for daily riding, as I don't feel like paying $125 for non-aero Campy hoods.
+1 to the Niagara deal, as long as you buy other stuff to help on the shipping. The ebay deal is not too bad.

Not unless I have the fellow's permission and I hope you understand why. If you wish, send me a PM with your email address and I will pass your interest on to the hood supplier. How does that sound?

Perfect.
I've got the same deal with my source.
He doesn't want dozens of emails.
I'll pm you when I get home.
Thank you.

Though they aren't a perfect fit, I've found that the Cane Creek hoods can function perfectly well on other than classic Dia Compe/Weinmann levers. A little trimming might be in order, but I haven't found it to be mandatory. My bikes are riders, not showpieces, so that works for me.

+1
They're even sort of passable with some Shimano non-aero levers (I have them on some DA and 600 levers).
