Here's the completed pics from my singlespeed project, now codenamed: "Princess". She's the first conversion I've attempted. Please let me know what you think.
I built her for my g/f who hasn't been on a bike for about 10 years. My g/f just took the Princess out for her first test ride and as it turns out the 42:17 gearing was just fine.
The Princess isn't as "high class" as the name might imply. She was actually built from a "on a budget" perspective. The chassis is a converted old Raleigh Capri, circa early eighties I'd presume. Pure "nothing special" steel. She sports her original headset (I had it overhauled), original stem, and chromo handlebars. Bottom bracket is of the cheap Shimano variety, crankarms are 170mm Shimano STX w/ 94BCD. Chainring I got on super clearance from Nashbar, a Ritchey alloy 42T, covered by an "Engagement Ring" Tooth Fairy bash gaurd from Ebay, platform pedals curteousy of Performance...on sale of course. Wheels were canibalized off my defunct roadie, they're Mavic MA40s laced on to Shimano 600 hub/freewheel, shod with 700x35 slick tires from Performance (again, on sale). The 17T cog came off the Shimano 600 cassette. The chain was also taken from my roadie, a SRAM 8speed chain. To bring this rollin' pony to a stop we got Shimano Exage levers tied to classic center pull brakes, both found at a local used parts store. The pads are Kool Stops. The seatpost is a no-name from the same store the brakes were bought, and the saddle was a $10 deal from an REI garage sale...a Terry Gelissimo. To protect m g/f from the elements she hosts a full set of fenders. And last but not least, to give this black beauty some pizzaz the bars are wrapped in pink Colnago cork and matched with a pink ribbon, breast cancer awareness water bottle.
Oh....and she rides smooth as glass :D
