Since I'm stuck inside with a cold and general malaise (not party-related, either), I've been napping and surfing on and off today. Been watching these for a few days and just won them a couple minutes ago; my first bike-related buy of the year:

What was your first bike-related purchase of 2012?

I actually bought this '83 Trek 500 frameset yesterday, so it may not qualify. I put some 700 wheels and Noodle bars on there to start getting an idea of build possibilities.

Spokes - at 12:12 AM this morning.

I did the same... 150 spokes and 150 nipples to go with the spokes for two wheel builds (Hercules Kestrel (http://www.flickr.com/photos/threefamilyalbum/sets/72157628382207529/) and Carlton Super Race (http://www.flickr.com/photos/threefamilyalbum/sets/72157627680798239/)). I placed the order yesterday, but since the invoice didn't arrive until this AM, I'm counting this as my first bike-related purchase of 2012.

Raleigh mixte, got it at a typical garage sale price, off C/L (guy explained he bought it at a garage sale, intending to fix it up).

Should make someone happy come this Spring.

Just ordered a seatpost and QR binder bolt to replace the ones I raped off of my MTB to fix my nephew's. Didn't like to take my bike out of commission, but the option was to send him back home without the bike that was his Christmas present.

I saw the title of the thread and thought "Wow, these guys are hopeless!" And then remembered that a couple of short hours ago, I picked up a set of campy 8mm crank bolts on ebay to compliment a record crankset that was gifted to me. Just waiting on an FD and my cassette to come back from wheels manufacturing and I'll be ready to do this build!

For the $600 in shipping/handling (part of the haggling), I could have simply bought it an airline ticket. Seriously, it is cheaper for me to send/recieve stuff from Europe than it is the lower 48.

It is the second most beautiful tandem I have seen (the first was a touring/rando version of Col. Lloyd's Jack Taylor in candy apple read w/ hammered fenders). (Much) More than I cared to spend, but I am weary of looking. It is exactly the size for my wife and I, and it is vintage. Now some other projects need to go; and that is fine with me.

Things started off immediately on Monday with a flip find on CL. A 97 Bianchi Ocelot for $10. Seller is a roadie and thought it would be fun to work on his first mtb. He bought it at a police auction, but realized later it was much too small. It's also too small for me, which is helpful to fight urges to keep flips. :P
It's missing a cantilever arm, and the paint is a bit scratched. But for $10, once cleaned up, I'm sure it'll sell just because it's a Bianchi. :)

Happens to me all the time. That's part of the dark side of C/L. Not only are some of the buyers flakes, but so are some of the sellers. I'm on a bicycle buying trip, err, vacation. Been trying to get one person to return my call for four days now..... If I was local, it wouldn't be so bad. I have had sellers contact me back two to three weeks later. Realize that a lot of the best deals have flake sellers, and people focus on stuff that is more important to them.

My usual first purchase of the year is to take the annual gift card from my sister and head down to Performance Bikes to pick up 3-4 Vittoria Rallye sewups to get them on my spare rims for stretching. Only I get the and get one hell of a pleasant shock.

Performance usually charges $31.95 per tyre. The on-line catalog has them on sale for $27.95. No markdown at the shop, I'm a bit disappointed (shipping from the website is $4.00 per tyre), but I need them. Take them to the checkout, the clerk scans them, furrows his brow and says, "They've changed the stock number. This now ends in zero, which means it's a closeout. They're $22.00 apiece." I immediately went back and grabbed the rest of the tyres in the bin.

The clerk has no idea what 'closeout' means, whether its just that the local store is going to stop carrying them  or a general closeout on the part of the Performance chain :cry::cry:. If you need sewups, it might be worth your while to drop by your local Performance and see if they listing the same numbers that I got.

On top of that, as usual I waited until Tuesday lunch time (1200-1400) where my local store does a 10% discount on top of whatever the quoted price. Which means I paid $19.80 each for mine. I believe this is something that is just done by the Richmond store.
