General Cycling Discussion - Bike #3

I currently have a Trek 7000 hybrid that I use as my commuter and a Felt F75 for my road bike. I have been eyeing the Surly Necro Pug and took one for a test ride and had a blast. My wife told me that for a late Christmas present she would buy me one. Im wondering though, if a fatbike would be the best choice for bike #3. Should I go for this or something more along the lines of a 29er mountain?

The Pug is more for beach riding or perhaps, riding in ice camps when you're ice-fishing or something. It would be more of a novelty item in Columbus, Ohio. I don't think it would be a really useful or recreational bicycle there.

I say, go for either the Ogre, or the Norco Charger 9!

That pug will cost about as much as both of the two bikes you already have! But obviously these are all just recreational vehicles for you so if you have the cash to burn just buy the one that puts the biggest smile on your face! Test ride a 29er and make up your own mind! Giant has some really nice ones for 2012

Actually, everything I have read, and people that have owned one have said that they ride it year round, that it doesnt fit into the pigeonhole that people have placed it in until they ride it. The test ride I did was in great weather and I was actually laughing as Im riding through 2 feet of brush and up stairs without pulling on the bars even once. I was hoping for more confirmation from other owners that this enjoyment would last beyond the initial honeymoon phase.

Im not planning on doing much that is too technical, not sure my knees could handle it, so thats why I was thinking the Pug or the Mukluk

I don't own the Pugsley...but I want one! I test rode one out in Iowa City last fall and it was great fun, you can ride anywhere any time under any conditions. Don't plan on going fast that isn't the point of the Pug. BTW I currently have about 30 bikes so why do I need another one... :innocent:

On second thought, I guess that I could see the Pug as being a useful vehicle when traversing the snow in the Ohio winters. However, that's about it! If there are no terrain or surface issues, I just see the Pug as a slow and heavy bike...

30 bikes?! Do you ride all of them or are some of them for show? I assume you aren't running a store of some kind and these are all yours. Do you have a list or photo album with all your bikes? I'm curious how someone accumulates that many bikes. We need a new TV reality show: "Bicycle Hoarders" :-)

Variety of reasons, most get ridden, some are mine, some are my wife's, some are just passing through. Most are vintage, a couple are fairly new. Most of them are in my Webshots Album (http://community.webshots.com/user/wahooncx).

Wow! Riding UP stairs? Sounds awesome. I'd get one based on this test ride alone, assuming you don't have any other bike wants. (Personally, I've been considering a folding bike and also a 29er or cyclocross with disc brakes)
