Forum Suggestions & User Assistance - Inappropriate Language On This Forum

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Does anyone else feel some members cross the line with the use of inappropriate language ? I for one feel they do. Maybe its time for those who run this forum to step up to the plate and take appropriate action.

Might define what you mean by inappropriate..Helps to know what the boundaries are...This could be a George Carlin kind of exercise..."The whatever number of words you can't use on TV."
Couple words are socially unacceptable...Yes...But,then like when you get reared from behind by a pink Cadillac with an anti-cyclist nut cake, you just might get a little animated..
My view about profane words...Try to be polite, but prudenism can go too far to.

This is the INTERNET, get used to it or go home.
The current restrictions are fine.

Let us appoint John Q. Public the Official People's Thought Censor in the Struggle Against the Imperialists here at www.bikeforums.net
All hail our glorious language leader!
Just let us know where the inappropriate language is. We'll take it from there.
We really do try, but with the size of the forums and the number of posts that get started everyday, we can't catch everything. We depend a lot on people hitting the report button on a bad post, and from there, we can mop up the mess. I think we get about 18 pages of new posts every day. That's something like 450 posts per day to go through. Some are quite lengthy, and should count as two or three posts, like when FX John posts in the Politics and Religion. ;) But we'll do our best. In the meantime, if there's something we missed, just hit the report link in the bottom right hand of each post.

To add to what Koffee stated,
Also keep in mind what is tolerable for some is not for others and for others still is not even a swear word. I believe there has to be some level of discretion when removing words. There is a certain level of words most people will agree are obscene (they are typically blocked immediately with *****). Those are typically the ones that are censored actively. Otherwise unless it is a personal attack they will likely be left.
To censor everything that could potentially offend a small number of users (while I might add offending an equal or greater number being censored) would not only be a tremendous workload to keep up with but also be pushing some limits of posting freedom.

Fourteen posts since September, and already demanding change? It's a wonder how this forum ever managed to get along without you until now! :D
Really, if you're serious, PM a moderator. However, please be aware that they are very active in these forums, and have deleted more than a few "out of hand" threads. My impression is most are unpaid volunteers. What's the membership fee again?
You impressions are correct :D (although it is all, there are no paid volunteers here)
**** yes i agree
This brings to mind...

John Q. Public does not take joking lightly. I got a very nasty email from someone claiming to be him.
Here is your moment of Zen: He used bad language and threatened me. Imagine someone taking the internet so seriously.
Here is our friend's email header. Can one of you super smart types figure out if he is real? I have editied out the unnecessary addresses.

Well, looks like the charter.net mailserver is claiming that the from address belongs to either a mailing list or an alias but is unable to fully verify the members.

I advocate the use of the ümlaut whenever you need to swear.
It makes you look hellishly cool in a Germanic, industrial rock kinda way. Use it liberally.......or.....come over to the Aussie thread and Hitchy will teach you the quaint vernacular usage of the nown, 'd¡ckhead'!

or just call someone a rooster teeth.
think of another name for a rooster, and what teeth do, and you have the gist of it.

I guess that depends on where you live. In Australia there is only one word that isn't use on TV often, but even then Sex and the City used it several times uncensored on free to air TV. So virtually anything goes down here. Afterall we were settled by convicts.:p
CHEERS.

Despite being settled for convicts, we have those roadside honesty box stalls where you grab flowers, vegies and make the requested payment. Strangely enough everyone pays and nothing goes missing.
The shifty eyes come from looking out for 'roos. If you're not careful they'll knock you out for a six! Howzaaaaat.
Over the head, Adrian. Over the head. How could anyone outside Australia even comprehend: Howzaaaat? Especially when it's expressed by one S Warne?

nah different
smoking is based on the process of sucking on the object being smoked, whilst a head is part of something (usually the tip of the object).
So according to my crappy examples, a d**khead would just be a giant tool, while a d**ksmoker is actually performing an action and mot merely showing that he is indeed, a giant tool.
Tool is another great Aussie word, which was used by Baden Cooke during a TDF interview. I think the convicts have hi-jacked this thread. Nothing new. :D

Down at the beach you should have seen those white pointers narly a cozzie in site - it was almost worth dodging the brown eyed mullet! I was flat out like a lizard drinking keeping an eye out. Phwaor it was dry as nun's nasty. My grunders were grinning like a shot fox as if they were at the Gabba. Downed a few XXXX coldies and headed off, but the booze bus was out and I had to blow in the bag. I offered a bushman's hanky but the copper wasn't interested and treated me like a dero and shoved me in the divvy van. I was mad as a cut snake deadset true! I chundered inside but there was little room and got my clackers covered.

One of the Aussie Rules footballers was recruited from the Irish Gaelic League, and when asked about the difficulties of playing here, he said: "the Aussie slang".
He commented that Anthony Rocco said to a team mate: "just bomb it down the guts", so the Irishman didn't know what he was then expected to do to counter this opposition "tactic" :)
