Hiya! I've just returned to the forum for the first time in years and you've given me something to reply to!

Are you just visiting? I'd try to rustle up a bike and get away from Grand Central for a day. Pick a downtown avenue and go until the road ends. Find a bridge and cross it! It will be awesome. Unless you're specifically trying to find and buy something, the city itself and riding around in traffic will be much more interesting than any shop. Have fun!

Chari & Co, Affinity, Continuum, and 718C are the dopest.

+1 on crossing the bridges-- just not the brooklyn. at least not during the day-- kinda joyless.

718 is a lovely shop. the east-side sid's isn't far from GC either.

totally agree with everyone else. chari and co is cool to look at, but that's about it. the dudes at affinity are awesome and super nice, that's my LBS. you should def cruise around the westside highway or the FDR greenway if you get a chance. it's one of the only uninterrupted bike paths around. but riding in traffic is always fun.....

718 is rad. 2 blocks from my house.

And what are some cool touristy things to do (other than EATING)? I'm chillin with my little sister, so they'll have to be PG13 appropriate things.

Grand Central itself is great. since you're right by the 4 train, getting to things like the Bronx Zoo and the met museum will be easy, and most of the midtown tourist destinations are in walking distance-- MoMA, Rockefeller Center, Empire State building, Times Square if you have to... this is the low season for B'way and lots of shows will be closing/about to be closed, so you can likely catch a show on the cheap using the TKTS booth in times square.

you could head to eataly on 23rd and 5th and marvel at the fact that Mario Batali's giant all-things-italian store seems to be patroned entirely by Italians.

NYC's best attraction is our huge supply of walkable neighborhoods. You can dodge the Sex and the City cupcake-buying nimrods in the west village ;), check out the east village, head across into Brooklyn and check out Brooklyn Heights, eat on Smith Street, etc. If it's a nice day, the walk from Grand Central to the Manhattan Side of the brooklyn bridge could easily be a quick 2-hour saunter.

It's gonna be too cold tomorrow to be walking too far, so tomorrow we're gonna explore Grand Central, grab some chicken/rice, maybe walk around Rockefeller Center, FAO Schwarz (toys!), Bergdorf Goodman for some $5000 shoes and the Sony Store.

When it warms up a little more I want to go to Gramercy Tavern for the $14 sammich/soup special and check out Eataly.

Tip: If you want to really have fun in NYC, you gotta get away from midtown or the touristy areas. You gotta hit up Chinatown before you leave. If you guys are around during the weekend and want someone to show you around I might be free to give you guys a tour of the dopest places to eat.

Don't forget Chrome NYC! And there's an AWESOME traditional Chinese place called Big Wong in Chinatown... :D

the museums are always worth checking out. the new museum down on the bowery has an awesome "sensory" exhibit, where they have a slide that goes through all 4 stories of the museum, goggles that invert your vision, and a sensory deprovation tank (don't do that. several people got ear infections from it).

as far as stores go, the insanity that is Uniqlo is worth checking out for basics.

I am too! The sales are INSANE. 10 pounds for a merino wool sweater (in London). Too bad there isn't any stores remotely near me.

My sweater is pretty faded (been wearing it regularly for 2 years now)... maybe it's time to get another one?

I had one like 3 years ago and lost it. :(

I just got some and now instead of using my (extremely pricey) icebreaker undershirt under jerseys I'll wear them instead. Even in the summer, they just wick away the sweat (hopefully)!
