Commuting - Winter commuter, built for South Pole

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I saw this story on the BBC News iPhone App and thought you should see it.
** How do you cycle to the South Pole? **
An expedition is attempting to be the first to use a bike to reach the South Pole. So how can you cycle in some of the most extreme conditions on the planet?

Neato. Kind of looks like it would be fun to test ride.

I do love this:
"She also won't be taking a puncture repair kit with her as it is extremely unlikely the tyres will puncture due to the steel belts woven inside. "
Murphy? :)

OMG, I've never seen fate tempted in such a manner! I bring 2 tubes and a spare tire with me on a century so I'd probably take a spare steel belted radial or two on the south pole trip.

They are tubeless tyres so probably filled with slime.

I'm surprised it's using a derailleur rather than an IGH. Hope that doesn't ice up.

Probably gonna be too dry for derailers to ice up.

Why not just buy a Surly Moonlander? You'd think those tiny tires would be a liability over the rough jagged ice and in fluffy snow...

Hannebrinks do look fun. They've been around forever. I first heard about 'em in 91 or so.
Cool, but not sure how this relates to bike commuting.

The call it minimalist yet it has what looks like a suspension fork? I would go with a moonlander but I have never been to the south pole either so I could just be talking out my ass. I think I would be worried about tubeless in such extreme cold as well.
Either way it could be a hell of a trip and hopefully she makes it.

You think? At -25C?

If a Hanebrink with 'aircraft aluminum' was on the table, why not get a Moots Ti frame for 4" tires? Or 5" they must have caught up to the Moonlander tires by now.
It's nice that the frame is seamless, I can't count the number of times my frame has unrolled in the cold...
(but still good for her, go get'em!)
