Commuting - My Wife's the Greatest

My wife bought me a new Trek 7000FX for Christmas, I'll use it starting in March to commute 28 km round trip on a daily basis. We picked it up on Fri and it is in my garage covered up - I'm not allowed to look at it until Christmas Day - but what a great feeling to get a new commuter. My wife isn;t crazy about me commuting alongside rural roads and highways, but she really supported my passion, and you gotta love that

I just got a new bike too. Not exactly for christmas, but I went to the LBS to look and found what seemed the perfect bike for me. Specialized sequoia elite. The shop was going to give me a good price, but I still don't like spending money (i'm a little on the cheap side). The wife kept prodding me and saying things like "You don't think you deserve it? You've been riding your bike to work for over 2yrs now. Your old bike is...old! If you like it, you should get it". My original plans were to wait until around summer time to get a new bike. But I got it anyway. and my wife was really supportive. I'm happy with it so far (except the saddle).

I just love the bike and I'd hate to get it all gummed up with grime and slush and stuff - rain and mud I'm OK with but that horrible salt and Calcium chloride they put on our country roads could make short work of killing my new ride!

My wife is also pretty good.

I had her sign a Hanukkah card and placed a picture of a Lemond Propad in the card. I then gave the card to myself. She proceeded to tell me that I needed another bike, like I need another whole in my head. In the end, she let me get the Propad to add to my stable of other bikes.

Needless to say, she used to be a Cat 2 racer and wanted a Tandem instead of a diamond ring for our engagement.

Yeah, that's the stuff that that I subject crappy old bikes to. :) If I spent 20$ on a bike then I'm not out much when the chain, derailleurs, and freewheel get rusty.

My wife has been fantastic about my commuting. She worries when she reads a story of someone being hurt but she is very supportive. I'm also in the Army Reserves and this takes up many weekends and summers. Although she would prefer me at home she knows it is important to me so she backs me up.
