In a previous post I had rambled on about my pseudo commute that I had taken up. Well than about 4 days later I crashed my cage into the back of a lexus and my car would cost more to fix than its worth so now I have no car. My car's lack of value seemed pretty funny when me and my friend would have our bikes that were worth more than my car on my rack, but I digress. So I have been car free for the last week, I eventually will get a new car there is no way of getting around it.
Last night my dad drove me back to my grandmother's house, who I live with during the week while I work and go to school, she doesn't have a license so now my bike is my only means of transportation. I will be riding it a few miles to the train station than to the light rail than from the light rail station to school. I will be using my fixed gear and the biggest messenger bag I could find laying around my house, panniers and my Jamis would have been a little too nice for Jersey city as well as not too easy to carry down the stairs at the PATH station. I've got my ulock and cable lock, spare tube and small pump, tire lever, multi tool, armadillos on the fixed gear, and a big bright white helmet. My clothing will be a mixture of bike specific (reflective Nashbar jacket, helmet, gloves, smartwool socks, spd shoes) and street clothes. I am planning on leaving early today in case I encounter any problems. The only problem I have come across is that I will need to take the bus to work because of how early I leave and bikes not being allowed on trains during those hours. I am pretty excited about the whole thing actually, seems like it should be interesting. I have commuted before just never in an urban area or with a mix of public transportation. So anyway, wish me luck.
