I just found some of these figures from the Velo Quebec (http://www.velo.qc.ca) Web site:

Québec’s cycling industry is responsible for 85 % of Canadian production.

There are 700 retailers in Québec, about three times as much per capita than in the U.S.

On average, Quebecers spend about $26 per person on bicycles and bike accessories annually, compared to $21 eslewhere in Canada and only $14.50 in the U.S.

My neighbours, recently arrived from Toronto are continually amazed at how many cyclists they see in Montreal. I guess it's true.

In Montreal, drivers seem to respect cyclists, even with the stupid antics that many of them pull in the downtown area. I keep on hearing of car-bike incidents where people driving cars menaced bikes. I have never once witnessed, had it happen to me or even heard of such a thing happening in Montreal or the surrounding area! :D

I moved from Toronto to Montreal 18 years ago, and have certainly found that motorists are more aware of cyclists. In Toronto I was taken out several times by motorists who "didnt see me".

On recent visits to Toronto I have seen a lot more cyclists, and they certainly have much better parking facilities for bicycles in the downtown area than Montreal. They also have streetcar tracks which are not very bicycle-friendly.

I wonder what accounts for the difference! Was there a breakdown, province by province. I'd be interested to see how Manitoba stacks up.

It's great to be in a city where cycling is so popular, congratulations! We're working on it here!

Aerobat I will be in Winnepeg for a few days at the end of July. My wife has arthritis so doesnt do hills, I think Winnepeg is her sort of cycling country. Maybe we can rent bikes while we are there and help to increase the profile of cycling in Winnepeg.
