i'm just about fed up with my rear wheel pulling out of my old trek's rear horizontal dropouts at the most embarrassing times. (ie. blasting away from a light or up a steep incline.) up to this point i haven't had too much trouble, but lately i've busted a couple of bolt on QR's when attempting to tighten them so as to actually be effective in keeping my rear wheel on. so i'm thinking about getting a hollow threaded rear axle about 20mm wider than my current one and cranking on some nuts until i hear them grunt a little. anybody have any thoughts on this?

Why not run solid axles? Weight weenieing?
One of my bikes tends to slip rear axle a lot. Best Skewer I've found is late 70s/early 80s Campagnolo. Works better than cheap track nuts for me. I've destroyed track nuts trying to keep that particular rear wheel in place.

If you go to a co-op you will probably find a million Japanese Campy-knock offs. I have 5 Sunshine/Sansin skewers, 3 in use

Thx hairnet, I should look for one of those. Then I can get my Campy skewer back with my Record hub and run a Sansin on my Suntour Cyclone hub on my SS.

What kind of quick release are you using ?
An easy way to improve the traction of a quick release, even when you are using a closed cam version, is to add a lock washer between the face of the QR and the dropout... I prefer old SA three speed lock washers.
Use these and a decent QR and your wheel will not budge.

i saw a duplicate listing...link was to the other (identical) thread. perhaps OP / mod deleted? that was my point anyway.

thanks for the concern.
i'm temporarily using a different QR unless or until i find a suitable axle. it's not as if i don't have a fine selection to choose from.
honestly, i suspect the qr is jacked up a bit... we'll see.
