I wasn't really sure which sub-forum to ask this question, but I figured many of you are well versed in locating uncommon bike parts. I have been looking without much luck for a new 1 1/8" quill stem for my bike. It needs to be silver tone and a removable faceplate would be a bonus. I can find a million 1" quill stems but 1 1/8" are not as available. Any ideas where to look? I've been checking ebay but that is hit or miss and they have mostly been painted black. My dreams stem would be about 100m reach with a rather long quill so I can raise the handlebars up without worry such. Let me know if you have seen a store selling something such as that. Much appreciated.

1 1/8" quill stems are a bit unusual. they are out there but but most are black and very very few will have a removable faceplate. also most were made for flat (or slightl rise) MTBs and ATBs just before most of those bikes swithed to threadless a year or two later.

also back when 1 1/8 quills were being used most did not have a removable faceplate, the few that did were very pricey and often a custom aftermarket upgrade, usually special order.

a long quill is another item you will likely not find as again alot of these were for MTBs and ATBs

what are you trying to put this on? a threadless adaptor may be your best best

Yes, unfortunately I've come to find out that everything you stated is true. That is why as a last resort I wanted to post a question here just in case I was missing something. The bike in question is not vintage at all, it is a 2010 Novara Transfer bike designed for commuting. The only reason I can think of why it came with a threaded stem is to make it easy to adjust the bars. I was hoping to avoid having to use an adapter, but I think that might be necessary if what I want is not available. Here is a stock picture of the bike from REI's website where you can see the stem in question: http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f92/sjt78/REITransferLarge.jpg

Here is a picture of how the bike looks now with different handlebars that sweep back a bit and that is why I want a longer stem to extend the cockpit a bit: http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f92/sjt78/IMG_03331.jpg

There's a kalloy branded adjustable 1 1/8" stem (http://www.amazon.com/Avenir-Adjustable-Angle-Quill-110mm/dp/B002BVW5CC/ref=sr_1_2?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1325983590&sr=1-2) that probably has the features you want but it doesn't seem to be made in a non-adjustable model. Hope this helps.

I've never seen an adjustable stem of that design. Any idea of how sturdy it would be?

I used a 1" version for a while and it came with a rusted bolt so it never moved but I've heard adjustable stems aren't as sturdy as solid ones but I think that's kinda obvious... mine was on a hybrid so I never really rode it too hard either.
