Hi - I have been offered a deal on a Giant ATX 840 for AUD500 but just need some advice on whether it is a good deal, what I should be looking for in the bike and other questions I should be asking. Sorry just don't really know what I am talking about re suspension, disc brakes, gears etc. Any help/advice greatly appreciated!! It is advertised as follows:

Two sets of tyres, (Road & Off-Road)
Bar ends,
RST spring suspension Forks,
Shimano step-in peddles,
Shimano deore' gears,
'Avid' Cable Disc Brakes,
Quick release hubs,
Very light.
Frame size: Small (17'')

Well, the main questions you need to ask yourself are does the bike fit you? Test it out before buying, for £500 AUD it doesnt sound too bad, do you know what year the bike was made? Component wise the bike is ok, check all the bits though, and MAKE SURE to check frame for weld stesses or cracks, if its an older bike, this is more likely to occur on an alu frame...

Thanks - yes 2001. Am told excellent Condition, mostly used for road riding but haven't seen it yet. I suppose the only test for weld cracks is physically looking over the bike for them - there are no tricks to it?

Dont think so, just look really hard... see if u can see anything suspicious, even if the smallest crack is found, dont buy it, also look for dents, as these wont do the frames any favours either :)
