Classic & Vintage - My 3 new bikes: Exxon Graftek, Peugeot, Cannondale(?)

Picked up all three for $158 (49.00 each plus tax)
Exxon Graftek's specs:

anyone know the model of this one?

That may be something other than a Peugeot...any idea what the BB threading is?

Option A: Peugeot PX10 thats had alot of work, internal cable routing, bottle bosses, DT shifter bosses, chain hanger would have been added
Option B: Not a Peugeot. What is it if it's not a Peugeot? I do not know.

Looks like a 1995 ish 2.8 series Cannondale.

The good news is if it is a Cannondale, their serial numbers are actually useful.

At one time I thought those that rode a Graftek and wore this jersey possessed some sort of magic.
It was the first time that I thought, "maybe it IS the bike".

49 dollars for a Graftek with DA? People pay that amount for just one DA lever hood! great, great score. Do they fit you?

I'm willing to bet the MTB is a C'dale. Are there initials stamped in the drive side drop out?

Funny, I had a similar score last year though nothing with dura ace:
Cannondale sr 900, miyata 110, bianchi strada, univega MTb all for $100. I kept the campy wheels and 600 cranks from the 'dale for my own bike and sold them all to by my lady a Nikon dslr to show how my "expensive hobby" can benefit her.

Perhaps only the decal is Peugeot. I think there was a thread recently attempting to ID a mystery French frame, and it has similar internal routing. Gitane?

That's a Cannondale mtb. I have a 3.8 series with the same rear monostay design. Components indicate yours is a higher end model.

The Peugeot decals look too new for the Nervex equipped (PX-10?) frame. The frame certainly could be a PX10 though, but it has probably been repainted at some time in the past and received some incorrect decals.

Do the dropouts have any branding? If Simplex, it would confirm French and point towards PX-10. If Campagnolo or Hurret, probably not a PX and maybe not a Peugeot.

Update: all the components have been taken off and cleaned/polished on the Exxon, the frame is getting cleaned up right now(lugs were a little rusty)

Oh and when I was cleaning the bottom bracket shell i noticed what i think is a serial number, its is "01" is it possible it is the first one made?

Someone seems to have rattlecanned most of the Graftek's frame flat black. I think this because nowhere on the main triangle can one make out the telltale carbon weave, and I know the rear dropouts and the brake bridge were stainless steel, just like the lugs. I wonder why the PO did that?

You might take some Goof-Off to the black on the rear dropouts - but I wouldn't use something that strong on the carbon tubes. If the paint comes off rather easily, try a less-harsh paint remover on an inconspicuous part of the frame tubing and see what you get.

Fork may or may not be carbon-overlaid. All Grafteks forks were steel; only some were left fully chromed, others - particularly Cool Gear Team bikes - had the fork blades painted flat black and the last versions sported a carbon weave veneer. Your fork has this veneer, which makes it a late model fork, anyway. The crown should be chrome under that flat black paint.

I hope the Graftek cleans up well. That's a bit of history there :)

The carbon tubes have not been painted, but have had their clear coat removed at somepoint. I drop outs however have been painted, they brake bridge has a repair (what appears to be carbon to re attach the brake bridge) and yes the fork has the carbon cover with chrome fork crown. I have some very fine steel wool, would this be ok to use on the stainless lugs? should I use brass instead?

Chad, try a paint stripper first on the dropouts, then brass wool and see how they clean up before proceeding to the lugs. That way, you get to do some experimentation on a less-conspicuous area of the frame until you hit on the perfect solution.

Remember, the fittings are stainless steel, so you don't have to be as concerned with how you de-rust them as you would if they were chrome plated.

Not all grafteks had stainless steel lugs, your bike might have been built later if it has a wider rear spacing, good way to tell is if it has blue epoxy around the seams, if it does, it's a good bike that you can ride because of the better epoxy, i wouldn't ride an older one because the glue will delaminate and tubes will come loose.

Wow, I missed this the first time around. That was quite a score! Where did you find these? Were these at a thrift store or pawn shop? (Since you mention sales tax, I figure it wasn't a garage sale or CL find.)
