Today I managed to pick up a set of cranks (http://www.flickr.com/photos/threefamilyalbum/sets/72157628769864543/) from a gentleman in Baltimore to use for one of my bike projects. I believe these are Chater-Lea cranks, but there are no stampings on the cranks or the chainwheel.

Are there any experts out there that can offer an informed opinion as to whether these are Chater-Lea or not?

EDIT: I had this thread re-named because I think the title was confusing.

FWIW, I'm no expert but in many years of Brit bike browsing, I've never heard any references to Chater Lea making after market parts. Component designs were knocked off all the time it seems. It looks well made.

Clubman, I know there was a nearly identical similar set there but with Schwinn stampings, which he seemed to think was pulled off a Paramount or Superior. I did not realize Chater-Lea did not produce components for builders like Raleigh, Hercules, etc.

Do you have any thoughts on who may have manufactured this?

My limited experince is that they would be marked as such, also the casting does not look as finished as you would expect. They are nice though!!

Don't really have a clue. Nicklin usually had an N stamped on the back, Durax made a similar chain set but different orientation of the arms. Not Williams either. I have a set of hollowed out arms called Featherweights but they're 5 pin.

Are you thinking about using these on the Kestrel? They'd work until you find the ones you want. Good quality steel chain sets are hard to find on this side of the pond. Keep checking Hilary Stones web page?

I'm pretty confused by the set myself because there seems not to be anything identifying a brand anywhere that I can see. Oh well, I'll just have to settle for knowing they are a nice crankset.

I am thinking about using them on the Kestrel at least for the interim. It may be that I'll just keep them on the bike since I think they'll be a period correct part. I dug through a bunch of 3 pin cranksets like the Williams, but was having a hard time finding matching arms so this is what I ended up with.

As an aside, I managed to get a Kestrel saddle for the bike which should be on my doorstep by Tuesday. :)

I have seen enough parts (in photos) that have CHATER LEA stamped on them to form an idea that all Chater Lea parts have such stampings. So its absence here tells me no, those are not Chater Lea. I see no reason to think the crank and the chain ring are not from the same manufacturer, do you? Chater Lea rings, like their pedals, have CL cut into the design.

Very nice, though. You done good.
