Mountain Biking - reba/vanilla/mx pro

i am currently stuck with a dilemma here..i intend to change a new fork.. currently using rst which is a serious load of crap ...here are my choices

1) Rock Shox Reba Race

2) Fox Vanilla r 130

3) Marzocchi MX pro

Very keen on the reba but i dont noe if it will hold up to my riding style since it is an air fork and i have yet to ride an air one... i ride quite agressively but definitely not freeride... the reba also has one or two reviews saying that the air leaks from the negative to the positive chamber which makes it even harder for me to make the desicsion.. but there are lots of good reviews on it too...the vanilla is heralded for its "legendary plushness" but has less functions and adjustability then the reba but is slightly heavier ... as for the marz i only know of it as a 'tough' fork ..... the rs has negative air spring which is said to help the fork gain small bump compliance ... as for the fox and marz do they have a negative spring and if not, will if affect small bump compliance in any way ? thanks alot ...

Yeah The Vanilla costs a lot more than the MX Pro I know...

If you are looking at a fox, isn't it on par with the marzocchi z1 price wise. Why not consider it instead.

Reba Race if you got the money.

the new reba race looks like a sweet fork man, rock shox are pretty good company, good bang for the buck i hear...

The reason the Vanilla and MX Pro don't have negitive air spings id because they are coil sprung. All forks would be good, but it depends on what they're going to be mounted on. The Vanilla is a bit higher then the MX Pro as it has an extra inch of travel, so it would rake the bikes geo out more.

P.S. Ask any more specific questions you want, as I have a 2002 MXC (very similar) and a 2004 Fox Vanilla 125R (samething minus 5mm of travel).

thanks everyone .... should be getting the reba cos the fox would mess up my geometry too much... but should i go for the reba race or the sl ?? the reba sl comes in 100mm travel instead of the 115 in the race... does 15 mm make a lot of difference comfort wise ??

Looks like the only upgrade over the SL is the external floodgate according to the RS website. I'd almost go for the SL if the price is right.

15mm shouldnt make a difference to the comfort of your ride, but it will make the steering slower if you put it on a 100mm specific bike... But you should allow 10mm for fork sag somebody told me, so you might get away with it

I saw that also... but what is the floodgate adjustment? What does it do.
Also if you really want a vanilla you can reduce the travel to 100 instead of 130 via internal spacers.

All I can tell ya is I dig my Fox.

Personally I don't see any reason to go with the Race over the SL.. the only worthwhile upgrade seems to be the Team, which has a hollow crown to save some weight along with the external floodgate (whatever that is). I'd just save the cash and get the SL and spend the money saved elsewhere. :)

I just got back from a little bit of product testing with a Reba Race and I'm quite impressed. RoSho sent me a Reba and a Pike to try out. I started by replacing the fox float 100 RLT on the front of my Titus with the Reba. It is nice and adjustable. I like having a positive and negative air chamber, as it easily allows you to dial in the fork for a variety of plushness and spring rate settings. The floodgate is basically a lockout threshhold. You can lock out the fork, but then you can control how big of an impact it takes to blow by the lockout and allow the fork to move through its travel. This was nice on long singletrack climbs becaause i could just plow through roots and waterbars with the lockout on without having to micromanage the front end.

The travel adjust was easy to use, and was a nice range for the RX-100. Stiffness wise it felt almost as stiff as the fox. it defintely wasn't a noodle. I'll be interested to see how well these hold up, as in the past bushings and seals have been problematic on Rock Shox products.

For now, it seems that SRAM's ownership of RockShox is beginning to pay off in the form of viable forks for the bourgeoning trail bike market.

Next I'm gonna put the Pike on the 575 and see how that goes.

Yeah... one can go completely shimano-free and use nothing but SRAM products... especially now that they make cranks too. I think the only thing they don't make is wheels, stems, and handlebars... maybe seatposts and seats too.

will the seal of the reba blow or ' burst ' if i land awkwardly or drop from say 3 feet ??

It shouldn't.

I just had the first ride on my Pike the other day. Very impressed with the ride feel. I think you're going to like it.........it handled wonderfully on the front end of my Peyto. The Maxle 20mm stiffens things up muey beuno.

Jury is still out on the long term durability, but I'm gambling on SRAM having improved that quite a bit.

Peek on over in the "other" forums shock board; I did a quicky little review over there. A few others over there have had theirs a bit longer, and have better input so far.

SRAM used to produce MTB hubs a few years back, but have since concentrated on comfort market hubs with their Dual Drive hub along with a generator hub.
They don't have everything but damn are they close.
