Now bicycles talk and have feelings... Did you ask it and it told you this? Mine likes to be ridden from home but also likes an occasional trip out of town....it whispered in my ear....'take me to the country....'
As Galen pointed out in another thread, tandems have feelings...

I wonder about the personalities of some of your tandems.

Our tandem likes to ride with its tandem and single friends. It also likes it when my stoker is smiling and she smiles in warm weather. Additionally our tandem enjoys introducing new people to the sport of cycling (or tandeming), seeing new scenery, and taking on new challenges.

I've seen it smile when children get excited about seeing us ride through their neighborhood. I'm not sure what our tandem tells other people, but I occasionally see even adults smile at it.

I think our tandem's favorite thing though, is to bring my favorite stoker and I closer together. I really like our tandem. It's like a child who makes me proud because because it cares about others.

Hate to say it, but my Tandem is completely mistreated, but the rougher it gets, the better he likes it.He will always let me know when it gets upset, and requires a present to placate its feeling though. Last month it wanted new Gearchangers, and about 6 months ago it got new forks. Not really a bribe, just a little present to let him know that he is appreciated occasionally. Mind you, he Does not like having a wash. Show it the hose and he hangs onto the Clay it collected on the ride, just so I can't see the new scratches he's collected while playing with his mates. It takes a lot of care and attention with degreaser and warm soapy water, carefully sponging away the dirt, before he displays himself in all his glory as a Mountain Bike Tandem, that really works, and He's proud of it

Our tandem is very spoiled, stays in the house next to the dining room table. She gets a good cleaning after each ride which she loves and when we take her out anywhere she always flirts and gets lots of attention from people. She is very gentle and caring and makes sure that our ride is always comfortable and fun. It took some time to get use to each other, but being the newbies that we were she made it easy for us to learn (after the first initial ride). Even before she was completely born (assembled) my husband went down to the bike shop to take a picture of her. The guy at the bike shop, thought her coloration was beautiful. She has only been with us a little over a year but I'm sure we will enjoy each other's company for many years to come. :D

Our Zona tandem appreciates the attention and care from its 'older' owners and in return gives a s-m-o-o-t-h ride when we all go for a spin.

My tandem is not the prettiest or the priciest. She is like the friendly Librarian – always available, always helpful, and always willing to perform her tasks without fanfare. She is solid and dependable. She may not be the raciest chick in town, but if you whack her fanny, she can be fast – as fast as you want to be. She has a solid ride that keeps my stoker and me coming back for more… even on these cold winter days. Most importantly, she is an enabler. She makes the riding experience shareable! And that is what I like best about her.

Neat question and replies.

However, here's a different perspective.

To quote Lance, it's not about the bike (or tandem, as the case may be). Our tandems are just machines. Any perceived personalities are merely reflections of the owners, i.e., if the tandem looks good and runs well it's because I keep it that way. If it looks like we're having fun on the tandem it's because Debbie and I love each other and are having fun being together. If people think riding a tandem can make you a better person it's because they have been talking with Debbie and probably not me.

My other guiding principle about life in general is to never fall in love with anything that can't love you back. But, that's just me and I'm reknown for being just a little bit odd.

Sounds mushy, but true...

Mark.....

You are a cyclist. And by definition that makes you a little bit odd. Relish your oddness!!

Ours whispers to my wife "Let's go to the beach". It whispers to me "Let's go play dirty in the bush". It likes to be pushed hard, and never ever complains.

Our Santana shares a bedroom with our other bikes. I've never heard it say anything, but since my school/job slammed my schedule, I hear an occasional sigh from thereabouts.

It likes full water bottles, fresh batteries in the lights/blinkies and the oped road. It likes goin 54 mph down hill listening to zeppelin on the tandem com.

It especially loves the look of admaration that children and adults give while we are crusing at 30 mph on the highway like a majestic stallion running beautifly though lush green pastures.

Has a particular affection for several cups of good coffee pre-ride, gentle wind through the live oaks, limestone hills, green mountain cedar, smooth caliche ranch roads, warm (even hot) sunshine, a river swim post-ride, followed by a great Mexican meal with a few chilly cervezas, topped off ultimately with a soak in the hot tub under the stars. Sweet.

BIKE doesn't usually swim in the river, or soak in the hot tub, but you get the picture...
