Ok i know you guys are going to think im dumb but i have searched through the forums and couldnt find out. What is the difference between a tire and a wheelset? Sorry if this is the worst question ever asked im just a little confused! Working on my fixie trying to learn as i go. Thanks!

Wheelset: Front and rear wheels.
Tires: Those things that go onto the wheelset that then have a tube put in and filled with air.

wheelset: metal (or carbon if your fancy)
tire: rubber

Carbon is an element. You cannot say life that is based on chemical bonds with this element is made of this element. This is not how chemistry (specifically organic chemistry) works.

Wood has something like a 50% carbon content. So wood is half carbon.

God, I hate ochem.

I don't see it. Convince me that something that is made up carbon bonding with other elements means it is made of carbon.

your right, theres no carbon in it.

The main point of my argument is that just because something contains carbon (one or more of its elements is carbon), it doesn't mean that it is carbon.

yes, but containing carbon, and being carbon based, are two completely different things..... i definitely did not say that wood contains a carbon molecule so it is carbon. I simplified something that is carbon based, meaning its a string of carbons with other compounds branching off of it, and more than 50% carbon at that, can be identified as carbon in simple conversation. Sorry, should have said it was a compound of Cellulose, Hemicellulose, Glucomannan, Glucuronoxylan, several polysaccharides, and Lignin (all carbon based compounds btw).... because that is MUCH more appropriate for this here bicycle forum......

Back on topic real quick. Can you have a tire and not need a wheelset ever? Can the tire just have spokes on it?

Nagrom_
01-10-12, 11:22 PM
nah... tire needs to attach to something, totally cant tell if your trolling......

Nagrom_

no worries, just stick to that basic idea, anything that is rubber is the tire or tube, everything else is a part of the wheelset

Don't really understand the logic here. You said that wood is technically carbon. If you're trying to be technical, you shouldn't make a bold leap like that for the sake of 'simple conversation'

So when the cookbook said butter did it really mean milk? No wonder why my pancakes suck.

Serious? I'm just trying to keep you from running around and saying everything that is carbon based is carbon.
That's not just a simplification for 'simple conversation.' That is scientifically wrong. It is not semantics, it is a matter of a true statement versus a false one.

semantics....... saying wood is carbon based, vs saying wood is carbon is semantics, and someone not nitpicking wouldnt care about the difference........ this isnt butter vs milk...... this is butter vs. unsalted butter...... thats why your pancakes came out perfectly fine to someone who isnt a goddamned pancake connoisseur.....

EDIT: my 100th post on a bicycle forum said nothing about bicycles, but instead was an argument about chemistry with analogies to pancakes.

While I still disagree, I cannot fathom how dense you must be to attempt a 'technical' claim and then back away from it just so you don't have to admit that you are wrong. It no longer concerns me that you believe that it is okay to say that everything that chemically bonds with carbon is carbon.

My girlfriend says my pancakes suck because I'm a lousy cook. That's okay, because if I ever propose to her, she only getting a paper ring with a coal set in it. It's all just carbon anyway, right?

whatever man..... i cant fathom how dense you must be to pick an argument that simply focuses on one word, when i stated, after you called it out, what i meant...... but yet, you still go back to the word "technically"......

and to that last point, diamonds literally do not contain any other elements other than carbon. so yes, it is carbon..... how your girlfriend sees this is a different thing now isn't it?

I did not pick the argument. I said you cannot make that claim. You asked me to elaborate. I have elaborated. At this point whether you believe me or not is up to you. Of course, I probably won't hear it from you.

Its far from disbelief.... its not a difficult concept at all, and i fully understand it... my point is, my original statement "wood is technically carbon", as i stated, was not intended to mean that "all things containing carbon are carbon". yet that's all your fixated on....

whatever bro, its all good.... no hard feelings..... enjoy your night.

Only one way to find out. Replace all your ball bearings with berries and check your TT time.
