Framebuilders - I need to speak w/ a frame builder; gotta frame I'd like to mod

Hey all,

I had a frame modified a while back and have another I'm consider for an XC/all rounder type deal. The guy I had do some work before is out of touch, so I'm looking for someone else that can do it. Nothing complicated.....just some canti bosses, a hanger, and DT shifter bosses. Sorry if this is an awkward way of going about asking, but I don't know how else to do it. I'm price shopping, as it were. As well, I really don't know what going rates are. Mr. Dork Newb, here....:rolleyes: If anyone is doing work right now, would you mind contacting me? We can discuss details via PM.......or however it works.

I found myself another Trek 614 frame through a friend, though it's a little smaller than my original. I think it'd be perfect though for a 'cross build.

assuming your location is correct, if you are looking for someone relatively local, Meech is probably your best bet. He's on here occasionally. Otherwise there are people further afield. Around here, most people go to Bilenky in Philly. Franklin frames in Ohio is known for their repairs. Most framebuilders will do repairs, it just depends on the radius that you are willing to deal with a remote builder.

Anyway, Meech.......is he the dude in Arkansas you mentioned before? Somewhere around Mountainview or something? If so, I tried contacting him a while back and never got a reply from him. Local would be way cool. It'd save some on shipping time and cost. Someone non-local would be fine, though. Can you tell me what something like this would run cost and time-wise? I really have no idea.

And, yeah.......my location is definitely correct.

Edit: I went back that old thread and looked. Yeah, Meech is the dude. I'll see if I can contact him, again.

It would be about $75 for the braze-on work...but the paint will be ruined 1" either side of the added part. Figure $150-200 for a new finish.

I knew I'd need to repaint. So, I'll either get some quality rattle can or have my friend who does body work repaint it. Maybe $10-$20, there. Then, there's shipping......which'll depend on where it goes. All in all, not bad.

I sent Meech a PM. I'll give it some time and see if he replies. I'm hoping to have it all mod'd and built by Spring, so no big hurry.

Oh, btw....LiveWire, is that your blogspot in your sig? Are you Matthew? And, are you the one building those frames on the first page there?

Not really...hehe. I got my undies all in a wad. I'm sure I came off like a real a'hole. Didn't mean to. Sorry, man. And, you know, that last, little build went pretty well.....if you were curious. Setting a jig up was stupid tedious, but still fairly easy. Even if my friend were around, I don't think I'd have him do it. He becomes a real grump when he's working. Then, maybe he was just having a bad hair day.:D

Funny....the way my friend made it out, it sounded brazing would be an all day, super laborious task. But, now that I reflect on it, I've seen some plumbing brazing being done. It didn't look that hard. But, then, what do I know? Maybe bikes/steel are different.

Yeah, if I can't get with Meech, or he's not up for it, may I contact you?

Oh, one more thing I was wondering about.......in that link I posted above, the fellow had the chainstays "crimped", as he said, for wider tire clearance. I suppose that's an okay thing to do since he had it professionally done, but is also something fairly easy to do? What would that run? I'm thinking I may have that done, as well.

Lol....well, there's been a slight change in my plans! Dimitri's a really swell guy. We both came to the conclusion, though, I just needed to do something different than I'd planned. Plus, I discovered the front fork on the Trek was bent backwards a little. I'll need to straighten that out, but the final conclusion is that I'll be getting a frame that he's built. The frame will accommodate somewhat larger tires and has a threadless, 1 1/8" steer tube. So, it'll be stronger in that regard. Meh....all the things I wanted to do to this frame and for a little more I can have a frame that's already suited to the purposes. Flip a few things and I can recoup my expense, too. Oh! And, it has a mono seat stay! How cool is that? ;)

I'll see if it'd be okay to post a pic of the frame.

Ah, I see. The black frame pictured beneath that one is the same frame post-powdercoat...it was out the door the next day.

Thank you, Livewire. I'm very please with it. I thought it'd be pretty cool if ever I had the opportunity to own a custom frame and, now, that day is here. The mono stay was the deal clincher for me, though. I'd always wanted one with that. I didn't ever think I could afford a custom one before, but he gave me a real fair price since, I assume, it was one already built and in need of a home.

I'll get a couple of pics of it when I get it built up. What color to paint???....aaahhhhh!!!! :D
