Hello everyone,
I've heard about this site from someone who helped me at my community bike shop, Bikerowave (I live on the Westside of LA). I've been wanting to build up a bike from scratch for a long time but have always been lazy about it and put it off for another day.
This morning I awoke to a depressing emptiness. It was the emptiness of looking at a balcony where I had had my bike. Unfortunately someone stole it. If only I'd chained up my bike I wouldn't be chained to the bus schedule again.
Now that I really really wanna build a new bike I am here looking for info. I've never built a bike but have worked on a couple I've owned. I'm a student and don't have a lot of money to spend but I do have plenty of time.
Some questions:
1) New vs Used & Online vs Craigslist. What are your thoughts on these?
2) If online, where to buy parts? If IRL, where to buy parts?
3) Frames? This seems like the place to start. I like riding road bikes that can go fastish. I like going up and down hills too so no fixies or single speed bikes. Where can I find a guide for what kind of parts or brands of parts I should be looking for?
4) Any general easy to do guides?
Any other help or advice or general commiserating over stolen bikes is welcomed.
