Hello, I am 66 years of age and trying to learn to ride a bicycle. Despite a few tumbles (thankfully into grass apart from my first stack onto bitumen and a bloody knee) I am not doing too badly. I am still finding steering a little difficult but thankfully someone told me about not using the front brake to stop. This was the cause of the tumbles until I realised that I should use the back brake for stopping gradually.

I decided to learn to ride due to not being able to walk these days due to severe arthritis in my feet and riding seems to enable me to get the exercise that I need. I just hope that I will continue to feel brave enough to keep at it. Regards, Sister Laurel

Check in with the 50+ Forum. They are good people and will have many good answers for you.

As you progress, you may want to take a road-riding course from the League of American Bicyclists (http://www.bikeleague.org/programs/education/courses.php). This will increase your confidence and make you feel more comfortable riding. Click on the blue text where it says League of American Bicyclists to go to their website.
