Professional Cycling For the Fans - Will Discovery's High Definition Channel have Le Tour '05/other cycling events?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

How sweet would it be to be watching the tour next year in HD? Surely this must have been part of Discovery Channel's thinking when they became the title sponsor.

Just because they sponsor a team competing in the tour does not mean they have broadcasting rights. I would imagine that OLN has that locked up. Having said that, yes, it would be great!

I'm pretty sure that Discovery said that they would not be broadcasting any cycling.

Part of the team's deal is that Lance will be hosting certain shows, doing interviews, guest appearances etc. But they will not be broadcasting the TDF, and I'm pretty sure no other cycling venues.

Documentaries and educational cycling programs are possible, but not races.

Nobody will have the Tour, or any of the other Grand Tours, in High Def until the host broadcasters produce the events in High Def. Given the bandwidth demands of High Def and on-the-fly logistics of covering the races and relaying signals from dozens of wireless cameras, I doubt the technology exists yet for such an undertaking.

Actually the technology exists to make it happen but the problem is the cost involved in doing so would be too high for them. Let the technology mature for another couple of years and we will see it.

One thing I bet w CAN see is "The Physics of Lance" or some other kind of super-informative-yet-still-cool-to-watch "specials". Maybe "Extreme Engineering: Lance Armstrong 2050" where they talk about how the next "Lance Armstrong" will win 8 "Tours de Lune" on a special cycling track built from Earth to the Moon and how they have to use mag-lev tires just to escape Earth's gravity... ;) (Man, I love that show :D )

I hate NJ because we dont get the OLN on Cable so i dont get to watch the TDF :(

I saw one of the races when he won the 5th Tour when i was in Italy (as i was riding from London to Rome) and had a day off...ended up near the Gelatto and they had the Tour on the TV so i got to watch the last 15K of the race where that kids bag took Lance out.

Then this past TDF, i was up in Nantucket or some place for a long weekend at a friends place and in the mornings i would be able to watch the Tour, but it was the first three or four stages (sprints) so wasnt that interesting to watch. If only i got the OLN! hopefully the bikeshop i am working in this summer has a TV and OLN.

ROFL, exactly. There was a rap group called Public Enemy, and their DJ ("Terminator X") never spoke. The theme was "Terminator X speaks with his hands".

Folks, Bob Roll speaks with his hands. Drives me nuts!! :D

Well, that and him saying "Tour DAY France".

What's not to like though, thought he was great on the "CRASH!" dvd.
