Winter Cycling - Another First Snow Ride Report w/Pic!

Well finally! We got out first taste of winter today with temps in the 20's, and about 2 inches of snow. It's not much, but it is a start. I can't wait for the ground to harden, and for more snow to fall!

that's some beautiful biking country....beats pounding concrete in Chicago anyday..:)

The mix of frozen ruts, grass, and snow seem perfect to me. Several more inches will just be different. I'm sure you'll enjoy whatever is thrown at you.

Where in PA are you from? I'm in Houston, PA (Close to Washington, PA about 40 minutes South of PGH). Are you running studded tires? I've never done much biking in the winter before. I'd like to ride some xc trails this winter. I bought a pair of studded tires, but I'm wondering if they will be a big help, or overkill...

Hi Bacolmn. I'm about 25 miles south of Washington, so I'm pretty close to you. I don't have my studded tires on the bike yet, but when it begins to get icy, I'll strap them on. I'm just running a set of tubeless tires for now. I crashed on the ice too many times last year! To answer your question, studded tires rule on the ice, but are really not needed, and may be overkill for plain snow. However, you never know when that ice patch will show up.

I went out today (Sunday), and rode for about 3 hours. It was really hard to go back inside! Here's a pic from today:

I was out riding on Sunday as well. Do you have some good trails down your way? I usually ride South Park because it's close to my house. I had to quit early on Sunday because my shoes and pedals froze up. Are those Time pedals on your bike? How do you keep them from becoming a big ice cubes in the winter?
