Advocacy & Safety - LIFECYCLE: 365 days in the life of a bike in NYC

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

It's true, NYC is full of bike thieves.

Well, in order to keep your bike from getting stolen in NYC, you need to make sure that (1) it's locked, and (2) it moves and is maintained. This bike makes it to about day 200 (sometime in mid July) before it really gets taken apart. Once it starts to be vandalized, thieves know it is an abandoned bike and dismantle it further. There was a Raleigh around the corner from my apartment that I watched suffer a similar fate over the course of a month. Only the frame and crank are there now.
Sure, bit of an 'out there' example, since no one leaves 'their bike' sitting for a year. But, the infestation of bike thieves in NYC is undeniable.
Which is why there won't be any DX's, there, me and mine will stay local and make our money go further anyway....

Yup. I have to wonder how long it would have lasted if it was a newish/expensive bike.
My son commented to me... "hey, after 100 days of sitting unattended, the bike thieves knew it was abandoned."
@ 36 the bike is no longer locked.
isn't that a bit selfish?
Why not lock it up to something less useful?
