I know this isn't real vintage, but here is the bike I use as a beater. Well, more as a back up because I never ride it anymore. Anyhow, it will be converted to a trainer (slick tires) for road training next season. The frame is a 17" and the build is about 25 pounds.

I'm saying 1990.

10 years? the fram that is
Hard to say... the geometry and construction looks very similar to my 92-95ish Peugeot. If the headtube is 1 1/8th I would guess its maybe a 93 or 94? Otherwise I guess 89+

im gonna go out on a limb and say 88....just cause it seems like an illusion that its a 90's bike....haha
1992 - Frame is my guess. Looks like the Headset, front derailleur(Suntour XCE) date it that far back.

1985 - 1987
Ding Ding Ding.....You hit it right on the ball :D
Its a 1987 Douglas that was my first serious bike. It is a little bit small for me, but it climbed really well, and was really nimble. I learned most of my riding technique on this bike, and it has been through many crashes and is still going strong :)

Nice observation! I even forgot how old the front deraileur was on my own bike :p
I'm thinking of getting a XTR front deraileur for my Instinct, and moving the XT M760 over to this bike. Think it would fit??
Oh yeah, also thinking of getting these LX cranks. I know the bottom bracket has been replaced around 98, not sure if the BB in there now is tapered or ISIS. Would these cranks work? These cranks are 170mm, and I'm about 5'10" and half. The frame is already pretty small, so I'm not sure if they are such a good idea.

There are still 3 origional parts on this bike besides the frame. Can anyone take a crack at guessing what they are?? :D

THe headtube is a 1" threaded. One of the reasons why I went and got a new bike :(

Most of the parts ARE from the 90's :D

Depends on clamp size and cable routing
Those cranks won't work with either Square or ISIS BB's those are Octalink cranks. Chances are you should be running a 175 anyway

The XT FD will work top or bottom pull. I know the multi-clamp fits 28.6 mm, 31.8 mm, 34.9 mm, so I "think" I'm safe. The XTR probably would not work a whole lot better than my XT, but if I can get it for cheap enough, I mind as well get it.
About the crankset, I probably wouldn't bother with the upgrade. The bike is already too flashy with those wheelsets. A nice cranksets will just attract more attention to theives. Afterall, it is supposed to be my "beater" even though I never really ride it anywhere and lock it up. :D

Whopps...forgot about the water bottle bolts. But the other 2 have definitely been replaced :D

brake levers, handlebar, saddle?
The levers are Avids and look pretty new in comparison to the frame.. handlebar is a riser and they weren't popular back then... saddle, maybe.. but here's my guess... rear derailleur, cassette, rear brakes?

All right!!! You mentioned the prize is your new Rocky Mountain, didn't you, Ming? :roflmao:
I zeroed in pretty quickly on the seat-post clamp, headset and a few other clues. Pretty close to a spittin' image of the early 80's vintage 4130 Cro-Mo bike I have hanging in my garage (my first 'real' mountain bike and still a beauty). :D

LOL.....my rocky stays in my basement and will go into the grave with me when I die :p

Good observation! I really liked that bike even though most of my friends think it is a piece of crap. For some reason, I was still able to keep up with them, and was usually faster down rocky descents. Strange eh?

The seatclamp is one of the origional parts :D I've went through like 5 saddles because I used to crush seat rails like popsicles

Hehehe....cassettes wear out pretty quickly, and good points about the bars. The rear brakes are still in fact origional because I am not able to install V-brakes on that frame...

There is only one more origional part left on the bike besides the rear brakes, and the seat post clamp! It is the Suntour XCE front derailleur ;) I haven't seen the need to replace it just yet, but if I do get a XTR front deraileur for my Rocky, the XT will be thrown onto this bike. Pretty much replacing all the parts that could've been replaced. :)

Looks good! I'd say keep the Suntour FD. I run an old Suntour on my Attitude (actually didn't use the XT that came with the "package"). It works just as well as the XT (I'd bet) and those theives would stand a better chance of know what the XT was relative to the Suntour.

Thanks for the advice! I'm actually quite happy with how the FD shifts with my new shifter, the left one anyways :D
I really should stop putting money into this bike, and keep it as a "beater". I find it hard on my body after owning a FS, and will not really ride it that much on the trails anymore. As road bike, I may even convert it to a single speed later on.
