Im a newbie biker and i just bought a 2005 Rockhopper a few weeks ago. I noticed when ever i am in my 4 easiest gears in the rear, the chain rubs on the front derailleur bar. Is the chain ever supposed to rub on anything? Does something need to be adjusted???

Yes, something needs to be adjusted. My advice - run it back to the LBS you bought it from and have them give it a tweak. And ask if you can watch.

You have to pay attention to gear combinations... you can't be in your outermost gear up front and your innermost gear in the rear and vice versa... thats called "cross gearing" and will result in chain rub. If you just bought it a few weeks ago, the shop I'm sure has an adjustment policy and will take a look at it for you for free. Cables stretch and things go out of adjustment in the first few weeks.

I had to get onto pwrd about that... He'd be on his inner ring on the 9th cog in the back and I'd have to scream at him to get onto his middle ring.. lol.. he's gotten the hang of it now. Didn't take much yelling to get him to realize what he was doing.
