Advocacy & Safety - Dog Bite...........Crash kit?

I was in Sebring Fl. at the weekend bikefest 12/10/04 thru 12/12/04. We were out in the country side about 50 miles into a 70 mile ride. My two new friends and I came upon a female cyclist and a pick-up truck on the side of the road, so we ask if everything was ok, and she asked do you have a first aid kit. I carry a road rash kit under my spare tube in my seat wedge. So we stopped and she had been bitten by a dog. Bleeding and ripped open. I opened a wound wipe, then a second and placed a 3x5 inch band-aid over the worst of it. She was picked up and taken to the hospital, by the sag van, the dog was picked up by animal control this being his third attack on humans he will be destroyed, after its tests for rabies. I am supprised that no one carries a road rash kit, out of the four of us and the pick-up driver I was the only one with any kind of first- aid. How many carry a first aid or road rash kit? It just doesn't take up that much room.

I don't but of course I haven't fallen yet so...my guess is that next year this is something I will add to my ride kit.

Off the subject: I wish these cyclist events were better publicized. I belong to the St. Petersburg Bike Club, and didn't even know about the event. I would have loved to have participated.

I couldn't even get a paper clip into my little wedgie bag besides my multi-tool, tire iron, CO2 gun with cylindar, spare tube, patches and latex gloves.

Like the above post, my wedgie bag on my roadie barely fits my tools and Co2. However, since switching to a trike, I can carry more, so a small first aid kit is on my shopping list for the spring.

On long rides I carry a first-aid kit that I've put together over time: road rash, allergies, stings, big wounds, stuff for eyes and sunburn and dehydration. All in a rolltop A5 pouch that drops into the rackpack. But it doesn't go out unless I'm spending all day out there or doing something stupid (like going offroad). The 30-mile commute doesn't qualify.

road rash wipes and individual size eye wash. I have skinned my knees often enough to want something to clean them, because I am just going to get back on and finish riding home... and the eye wash is just because I had it available.

They can test for rabies while the animal is alive now? I thought they had to check the brain, not while the head was still on the animal...

I carry a slim wallet-sized first aid kit in one of my panniers. It was sold as camping gear.

In my seat bag, I carry a few bandaids, Neosporin, and some alcohol wipes. There just isn't much room for first aid in a little bag. However, when I commute with my panniers, I carry a whole first aid kit. It sure came in handy when I got hit earlier this year. I whipped out the first aid and cleaned up all my superficial wounds before the ambulance got on site! They still took me to the hospital though.

Agreed, I just live near Lakeland and would love to ride in another organized event. I've only done one, (Horrible Hundred in Cleremont), but can't wait to do another it was so much fun!

I always carry one when I mountain bike, but I never thought to carry one on the road. I probably should since I usually ride on the road alone...

A band aid and a pistol. Shoot the dog then patch the bite.

Along with a multi tool & patch kit, I carry neo-sporin & a package of hand wipes that would work for cleaning wounds. Depending on where I'm riding, I sometimes carry a small 9mm. Don

I carry a bottle of Brave Soldier antiseptic spray, but no Bandaids.

Ha Ha! I'm from North West Ga. and I see we think the same. I found out this dog has bitten three Humans. I say just shoot the f en dog.

I glad to see some one with my thoughts on bitting dogs. I found out this was the third human this dog has bitten.

I love animals, but I would not hesitate to put down a dog that bites and maims people. After the third attack I would also go for the owner! :D

I have a small first aid kit that is in a plastic box about 4"X4"X2". It's put together for backpacking, but it fits into my bike trunk just fine.

I carry different sizes of bandages, vet wrap, alcohol wipes, tweezers, scissors, sting relief capsules, the works.

As with my repair kit, it usually gets used on other cyclists.
