I have a pair of "choppers" that I got at a store that supplies construction workers with clothes. These $20 thick leather mittens work well for me, down to about 5F, and I have horrid circulation.

Or you can go very high end, and get Mountain Hardwear Absolute Zero mits for >$100. But then you really should get the same company's $400 Tenacity Descent jacket. These are on my Christmas list along with a bunch of other "must have" biking things, that I know I won't get. Actually, I'm going to wait and see if REI cuts the prices in half, next year, then maybe...

it got down to 25 F last night here in Houston, that's as cold as it ever gets here. 9 degrees and cycling, brrrrr....

I would highly recommend Saranac X-Static gloves. I got them on sale for twenty bucks (reg. $30) at the wilderness outfitter store. The sales guy said they're for snowboarding.

They're great for winter riding. It was about twenty-five degrees on the way to work yesterday and I actually had to take them off after awhile because they were getting too hot! At fifteen degrees they were toasty warm. They are also really light. It doesn't seem possible that they work so well.

it was 15 this morning at about 6:45 for my half mile ride to work. In regular kahkis and socks, with only a Carhart, it was super cold.

Watch Sierra Trading Post for good deals. You might also try Midwest Mountaineering (on Cedar) rather than the corporate 'co-op' (REI)...

Thanks for the ideas. I sort of forgot about Midwest Mountaineering. I used shop there, when I lived in Seward, but now reside .25 mi from Richfield and Edina, in the SW corner of the city. I've shopped at REI because it's so close. Is MM, really any better though. If they are more committed to helping the environment, I'd make a point of purchasing my overpriced hightec threads there.

My old winter time record of 15 degree windchill :eek: biking has been shattered.
It was 9 degrees this morning when i set out before sunrise: due in large part to favorable wind conditions at less than 10 miles per hour.
I got in 20 miles but was really disappoiinted with my new gloves...my Goretex,cold weather gloves.
Yeah, right...:mad: My digits were freakin' screaming when i returned home.
Gimme a lead on some really EXTREME WEATHER gloves.

Mittens are superior to gloves. I wear a pair of gloves under a mit/glove. THe mitten part folds back to reveal my gloved hand whenever too hot, or need dexterity. Having mittens is like being able to put your gloved hands in your pocket.

Gloves alone just don't cut it in cold temperatures for me. I have ridden in single digit wind chill with these and no problems.

I switch to snowboard mitts when it gets cold. Coldest this year -2F.

We're gettin' a little OT, but MM does donate some set % of pretax profits to various groups. I just like the feel there better, plus the sales crew seems to know their stuff better than the punks at REI. YMMV. Good deals can be found at Thrifty Outfitters once in a while too.

I will try Mitts over gloves from now on.
I'm not crazy about biking in single digit windchill conditions but i try to take advantage of minimal winds..anything below 10-miles per hour is a plus for me.

It was -19C/-2.2F with windchill -40C/-40F in Montreal yesterday, and I was quickly too cold in my new five finger Kombi gloves which I will return to Mountain Equipment Coop.

Today was -28C/-18F, with 13-30km/h winds bringing it down to -38C/-36.4F, and I was fine riding around for over four hours of start and stop errand running in Craft three-finger claws with cheap Auclair fleece liners.

That link will take you to a bunch of motorcycle gloves. I've got the JR Blizzard gloves, and they are keeping my flangies roasty-toasty right on down to 13 F and 2 F windchill (not counting the windchill from my bicycle!) Can be had for right around $50 US - I love 'em!
