ProTour teams agree ethical charter

The 19 teams that will make up next year's UCI ProTour, agreed on an ethical charter for the series on Monday, according to the pro cycling teams' body the AIGCP (Association Internationale des Groupes Cyclistes Professionnels). The charter will be submitted to the UCI today after which it will be signed off by the teams.

Key measures in the charter, which is a major tool in the teams' and the UCI's fight against doping in cycling, include the suspension of a rider as soon as a positive test is announced; dismissal of riders confirmed positive and a four-year ban on the hiring by another ProTour team of any rider who tests positive.

However, a proposal that teams themselves should be sanctioned if their riders test positive, was abandoned.

The ProTour teams also suggested that Continental pro teams - the next level down in the UCI's new structure - should see themselves as operating under the same code when invited to take part in a ProTour race.

So seems to me if Tyler can't get out from under his positive tests then he is gone for sure as no pro team can pick him up for 4 years.

Why don't we just seperate all organized teams into doped and non-doped catagories and observe the differences between the two, including overall life-span.

Perhaps TH's positive will be grandfathered under the old rules? Anywho, and more importantly, have you had a chance to put a few miles on that La Raza yet?????? :)

AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH  No and it is pissing me off. I guess I am not hardcore enough as I am not going to ride it in the rain or snow. This week has been a little better but I haven't had time. Got to get on the trainer as I haven't been on a bike in like a week and that was on the trainer. It looks damn nice. :(

Actually Continental teams are expected to more or less behave within the guidelines of the charter when they participate with Pro Tour teams. Whatever that means.

I was disappointed to see that entire teams would not be suspended when one of their riders tested positive. It's extreme, and it would suck to be suspended because of a rogue teammate. But you could be damned sure team doctors and trainers would be inspired to monitor their riders and cooperate with the UCI to avoid stiff penalties and suspensions.

i think that suspending a team would be a poor idea. to many riders who have nothing to do with it would be punished. it might have some positive effect but it wouldnt be a fair system

It looks awesome! That's a bummer though - just bad timing! However, I can understand why you hesitate to take a brand new bike out on these now cinder-packed, salty roads. I don't think I could do it either! It's plenty cold, and nasty in SW PA also, but I have been riding my single-speed mtb around town and such. It's already seen one cold winter, and it's about to experience one more.

If you get a chance to ride that sweet looking steed, I want a review. I really dig that blue steel frame!!!!! :)

The decision to ban the riders, and NOT the teams I'm sure is purely financially motivated. Fewer teams means less competition, and less viewers. Thus advertising rates go down. Hey, if someone cheats, and they can verify it by the use of multiple labs, then fine, ban the physician, and cyclist. My read on what transpired with TH is that it may have been multiple tests, but not necessarily multiple labs.

Just a point to ponder, not looking for an acute flame.

Its about time someone got serious about doping. 4 year ban pretty much
puts the consequences in the "your career is finished" catagory.
However I don't agree with the immediate ban upon positive, too many
variables, and there has to be provision for challenges.

I agree. Some guys naturally have monitored factors which would test postive under some tests - Like Damian Cunuego -- who has a naturally high Hematocrit level. He's been certified and the testers know beforehand. Although it is a rare occurance, rookies that may exhibit such characteristics would test postive for EPO.

BTW: Isn't this "ethical" portion of the agreement one of the disagreement points of the tour organizers? Everything I read changes daily. First they've joined in ProTour, then they've opted out. It seems to be a different story every day.
