Foo - So there I was...

...in the parking lot of my landlord, after paying my rent, parked in THE ONLY DAMN SPOT with black ice in it. I was also on the slightest of downhill slopes, barely perceptable. I put my truck in reverse and tried to back out, and I was stuck. Stuck on black freakin ice, on the edge of a crowned parking lot, stuck. So, to attempt to melt the ice, I floored it in reverse, then tried rocking back and forth, and after about 5 minutes of this, I finally started to move, and eventually back out. WHen my tires hit dry pavement, the truck stalled, adding insult to injury. What a pain in the ass.

That does suck, I was once stuck on black ice with my Grand prix and I did the same and blew the transmission!

Black Ice is a condition we people in the colder climes experience when there is standing water (usually just a light covering) and we have a rapid drop in temperture to below freezing. It looks for all the world like just water, but once you're in it traction fall to zero. Especially dangerous when driving at night. It will catch a stoopid driver and hurt them quickly.

Most of the times though it looks just like road because there is such a light covering of it. Usually occurs when the temp is relatively close to freezing. A little moisture on the ground and the temp drops and the roads are skating rinks. They allow studded tires in MT which helps the problem. I have never used any though.

What is great is when you are a new driver (me, BTW), and you see what you think is just water on the road, but it's really black ice, so you end up doing a 360 at 25 mph down a side street.

Some dumba$$ with a 2x4 xterra (I have no idea what the point of a 2 wheel drive SUV is other than to show the world you have no common sense) was stuck in the parking lot on the only patch of ice. It was great cause his front wheels weren't on ice, just his back wheels. I thought I would go help him, but then I just realized he was paying for being a moron. And the great part is that if he had a front wheel drive car he would have been fine. HA HA.

empty 2WD pickup without non-slip differential = worst winter vehicle on earth. However, a few well-placed bags of sand will make any RWD vehicle much better on snow/ice.
