Well, why not just start off with:
Isis // Panopticon
song: In fiction

Zeke-
Till the Living end
M83
"Dead Cities, Red Seas, & Lost Ghosts"
got played too often, now it's played out- but goddamn if it isn't
good nighttime bicycling music.
song of the year is by Circle Takes The Square. i don't know what it's called.
"Bite to break skin" on "Let it Enfold you" by "senses Fail"
M83
"Dead Cities, Red Seas, & Lost Ghosts"
got played too often, now it's played out- but goddamn if it isn't
good nighttime bicycling music.
I really liked that album as well, though I've not yet decided on what my *top* album of the year is.

For my nickle and a half:
Tom Waits - Real Gone
Zeke-
Till the Living end
I happen to be wearing a tattered black Zeke shirt with a huge pentagram on it at the moment...
No idea on album of the year - didn't buy any new albums this year...

..is it bad that i've never heard of any of these people?
either you're very young or very old or you just don't like music.
Fine...I'll say it.

tom waits is great, but album of the year?
for the same album we've been listening to since
"frank's wild years", plus some bells and whistles?
(he's a local boy- folklore galore. good stories about him)
yea, it's my nickle and half.
to me frank's wild years 'again' with bells and whistles is more interesting than a My Bloody Valentine 'again' with cheesy synths, but hey, that's me. :D
This is tough - Despite all the stuff I mentioned in the Panopticon thread (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=79422) , I've been listening to Pinback (http://www.pinback.com) 's newest, "Summer in Abaddon" a hell of a lot. That and The Velvet Teen (http://www.thevelvetteen.com) 's "Elysium."
what about Animal Collective?
that is crazy. the velvet teen are locals, too. and friends. and it's still weird to see them mentioned by anyone outside this town.
I like the album that has a picture of this guy doing this crazy stuff on a bike and this one song the alubum, i think its track 3, maybe.
But the song goes like this,
dooden tata dooden tata do tata chicachiachia boomchi bommchiboom, (this is the guitar solo part) rayyyyereryyyeyeye, i usually go ride faster on this part. Then the song breaks down......boom boom chi baaa boom chi and it picks up a little boom boomchibaaaboomchi, then alot (2 tiems faster) bombomchibaabomchi and then back to the guitars- rayyeyryeyayryyayryaryryeeyr.
ok ok ok, so the song doesnt exist, but wouldint it be cool if you had one that matched your ride
what about Animal Collective?
A friend told me to check them out - haven't heard too much. I heard as ong off epitonic, loosely it jogged my memory about Battles - who I also think are pretty good for riding fixed too.
I've liked the 'Teen for a while now - a friend of mine in SF knows them as well and she was always telling me to listen to them. Glad I did, Elysium is a bit of a departure, but it's a solid album - perfect for late night rides.

Agreed. Tsubasa off the companion disc is chilling...and appropriate for evening forays.
one might consider this my vote for M83 too...we shall see.
Although I think gunning down hipsters while trackstanding to "New Slang" by The Shins would be, well, ironical.
M83
"Dead Cities, Red Seas, & Lost Ghosts"

Medulla by Bjork.
I mean, have you listened to this record thru headphones?
Graceful. Elegant.
yea, it's my nickle and half.
to me frank's wild years 'again' with bells and whistles is more interesting than a My Bloody Valentine 'again' with cheesy synths, but hey, that's me. :D
I think I will have to put 11 cents on this as well. As for the "same" album since Franks, are you insane?
I would like to know of another artist that has changed music styles over the last 30 years or so like he has. Everything from country, gospel, rock, lounge, and more then I can think of. But then again who am I to judge some other persons taste in music?

i just rode my bike downtown, and who did i see?
tom waits and family, in thier s.u.v.
i didn't mean to knock tom waits- but the last three albums just didn't have as much impact as "frank's wild years" or "swordfishtrombone". the man's still brilliant.
and the velvet teen are from santa rosa, ca. there's not a whole lot here, but there are some good bands and some nice bikes. sycip is based in santa rosa.

Oh God, Isis is so overrated.
My favourites of this year were:
EP
The Pine / La Quiete split 7"
Full-Length
Life at These Speeds - Self-Titled 12"
The Life at These Speeds album actually came out on CD in 2003 I think, but I don't own a CD player (other than my computer, which has the worst soundcard ever), so as far as I'm concerned, it's a 2004 release.
No brainer for me. Interpol, Antics. If I had to choose a song.....Next Exit.

You can't possibly put Real Gone in the same category as Alice or that other one, was it Blood Money? The new one is a nice continutation from The Mule Variations.

I'm thinking either Battles or the less songy parts of the latest Wilco. I like the dynamicism of these and Panda Park. They're not just mere repeition but rise and fall, melodically as well as rhythmically.

Music is strange like that, u can just hear really old stuff for the first time and it's new to you. I'm catching up on the Pixies myself. I also been listening to wheezer and soul coughing. Kansas is so slow. But one thing i do know is what i like, i know it when i hear it.

Good News for People Who Love Bad News -- modest mouse
I'll echo Antics as well. And when i'm not on the bike, a couple more good ones are Our Endless Numbered Days by Iron & Wine, Elliot Smith's From a Basement On The Hill, and the Garden State soundtrack.
Doctor Who

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds "Abbatoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus"

My vote goes to Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes by Tv on the Radio. And within that, the song Staring at the Sun.

Defiance, Ohio's Gorilla Biscuits cover on that split is sooooooo good.
