Northern California - North American Handmade Bicycle Show in Sacramento March 2-4, 2012

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

yep, Friday is the day to go. Went to Austin last year and on Friday the crowds were light and it was easier to talk with the exhibitors. On Saturday and Sunday there was a crush of people and it was access to the exhibitors took more time.
Where in Sacramento? It was not mentioned in the web-site. (Or my eyes are just crossed.)

About Sacramento
The venue for this fabulous three-day show, March 2-4, 2012, is the Sacramento Convention Center, in the heart of downtown Sacramento.
The convention center is close to fine restaurants, hotels, museums, and the State Capitol. Sacramento is “small town friendly with big city amenities” and with a population of 1.5 million in the metropolitan area, it is Northern California’s fastest growing, most affordable, and attractive city.

seeing this is close and I have friends who moved up to the area This is a possibility bike show/friend visit. There is danger in that at least one bike that Kirk frameworks will be showing is exactly like I would spec if I had the cash.

I'll be there. I'm finishing up the 3rd and last bike that I will bring tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it.

I'll be there with two great friends. Looking forward to visiting Dave as well as Kent in the Eriksen booth!

I'll be there on Saturday for the day. I've been to five so far (San Jose twice, Portland, Richmond, and Austin) and always have a great time.

Austin was great and I expect Sac to be equally great (and closer to home.)

Has anyone filled out the volunteer application to work the show?
Have not heard squat in response, yet.
Something I said? Or does "loosely organized" apply in this case?

I plan to be there, and I believe bigbossman and MarkoPolo have it in their radar, too. Don't be surprised if LanceOldstrong, Midland, cccorlew, MyLi'lPony, gpelpel and some others come out, too.
I started a thread in C&V trying to organize a ride for the assembled out-of-town BF multitudes. To say the response has been underwhelming would be an understatement; you'd think the Show was in the wilds of Borneo or something. Doesn't mean we can't do one anyway, of course . . . .

I'll be there all three days. I should be volunteering for 2 of them. 3alarmer, if you are local, go to Edible Pedal and ask for Brad. He is heading up the volunteering.
There will be some great rides and after parties. Steve Rex is celebrating his 25th year as a framebuilder and having a party at Mulvany's (sp?) sat night and there is a party in the alley at Edible Pedal Sat night. For info on these stop by the Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates booth on the way into the show.
PM me if you have any other questions as I don't get in here too much.

For those of you planning on attending Saturday, I am finishing up a
wheel building class (Saturday seminars format) at the Sacramento Bicycle
Kitchen on that Saturday. The location, at 19th and I streets, is about
6 or 7 blocks from the Convention Center location of the show.
http://sacbikekitchen.org/
Since I have the spare keys to the shop and permission from the people
who actually matter, I will be present at 9:30 AM (and for some time
afterwards, because I work the noon to 4PM shift on Saturdays) with
a cooler of beer in the back of my car, and an interest in meeting those
who choose to show up.
If you want to ride over tho the American River Bike Trail, there's a spur
nearby that goes up past the Blue Diamond plant for access.
Again, you are welcome to visit anytime we are open, but if you want to
drink, it needs to be prior to when I start the class.
There is quite a bit of parking in the alley where we are located, and
it is usually pretty empty on Saturdays. No RSVP needed, if no one
shows, I'll eventually drink it all myself.:o

Hey 3alarmer, I'm sorry that I'm missing your wheel building class. I was on the email list you sent out but that time slot is really tough for me. We should meet up at the show. I know I'll be working the SABA booth for a while on one of the weekend days.

I'm registered and looking forward to this event. I work in the Sacto area so I'll be there on Friday.
I'll be there on Friday for sure! Planning to be at the doors at 11am when they open. I've a list of vendors to visit. This will be even more fun since I'm looking for a frameset for a new bike!

What are you thinking about for a ride, and when?
My thought had been to take the out-of-towners up the American River Trail, one because I have still never been on it and two because it seems like most of the rest of the country does not believe in hills. :innocent: As I said, though, the response has been pretty much non-existent.
At this point, nothing is in the works from my end other than I know I will be there at least one day and probably two and that I may or may not have my bike along.

There are a few rides planned. One from from downtown Sacramento to Davis (actually from pub to pub) and a mimosa ride Sunday morning. There are several parties happening around town as well. Stop by the Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates booth at the entrance for information about things happening. I'll be working the booth on Friday from 11-2, my name is Chris, stop by and say hi.

I plan to attend both Friday and Saturday. I'm game for a ride on Saturday (on Friday I'll have my 3-yr.-old in tow). I don't know the Sacramento area at all, so I'm reluctant to take the lead in any meeting spot or route suggestions. If someone else wants to propose a ride for Saturday, you can count me in! Hope to meet some of you folks.
(I'm cross-posting here and in the parallel NAHBS thread in the Classic & Vintage sub-forum.)

A link to some concurrent events:
http://sacbike.org/2012/02/north-american-handmade-bicycle-show/
We’re hearing rumors from all over Sacramento that there will be bicycle parades, art shows, parties (and afterparties) and rides. It’s starting to feel like all of May Is Bike Month will be stuffed into 3 days!
The show features all conceivable iterations of bicycles and all different kinds of events. Whatever you’re into—whether it’s racing, cruising, running errands, touring, or just having a good time around Sacramento—NAHBS & its entourage will have something for you.

Thanks for the link, 3alarmer. :)
Here's one that isn't listed on the SABA page. City Bicycle Works (http://citybicycleworks.com/) is having an after-party Saturday, March 3 from 6-8 PM at their Midtown location (2419 K Street). I'll be there.
I plan to be there, and I believe bigbossman and MarkoPolo have it in their radar, too. Don't be surprised if LanceOldstrong, Midland, cccorlew, MyLi'lPony, gpelpel and some others come out, too.

Ooops, sorry, I haven't been keeping up w the bfs. Took me a while to figure out what C&V was ... :o
LeeBob and I are spending the weekend in Folsom; we'll most likely ride the ARBT on Saturday and head over to the show on Sunday.
If you happen to pass by a couple riding a Lynsky (that'll be me) and a dusty-rose Rivendell (that'll be Lee - he inherited my Riv when he destroyed his Romulus a couple of months back ), say hi.

How did Lee destroy his Romulus?
We're going up Saturday afternoon.

How did Lee destroy his Romulus? A moderately high-speed encounter with a curb. He was a bit scraped up but otherwise OK. The Romulus' fork is bent and the frame is a bit out of whack, so it's now permanently attached to the trainer.
We're going up Saturday afternoon. Give me a call, maybe we can meet up w you!

Before taking the still pictures, I did a complete walk-through while recording video continuously, so here's a look at most of the bikes at the show. This is 24 1/2 minutes of 100% bicycles, not the camera pointing at the floor while I'm walking around or anything like that.

Since I also had a free pass for Saturday, I did a quick walk-through before the NAHBS Artbike bike parade. It was packed, so I'm glad I got most of my picture-taking done on Friday.
I have a few pictures from yesterday which I will upload when I'm done mountain biking today. For now, here's the silliness from the bike parade. :D There's a few "Burning Man" type bikes in here, including a pedal-powered palm tree that you can see in the first part of the video. Unfortunately he had mechanical trouble and didn't make it very far.

Thanks. :) I tried to get everyone riding by me at least once, which is why I got ahead of the group and pulled over. Were you riding an unusual bike? I know I showed more of the "Burning Man" type bikes than the regular ones, since they stand out.
I was riding a blue Worksman Port-O-Trike with 20" wheels and a blue and red backpack in the rear basket.
