Classic & Vintage - I need advice on a potentail purchase of a Peugeot

Less than 24 after restoring my Peugeot to riding order, It was stolen. It was my own fault for just using a cable lock. Anyways, a good soul sympathetic to my plight offered me the one along with this thread.

The pix suck I know, I didnt take them, and I dont think Im dealing with a guy that has much bike experience(like myself) so he didnt focus on the important parts. SOOO, given these pix, can you help me narrow down what year and model it might be? Its a tall order I know, but any idea on year would be great.

I can't see much of anything in those pictures.

The photos are so bad that it is hard to tell, but my best guess is a 1983 Centennial Edition PH12. If it is, it has an aerodynamic design.

From what info I could gather The little white I.D tag says its a its a 68cm(last 2 numbers) Is this possible? Did they make bikes that big? Also the SN#"s last two digits are 04

Not an Aero PH12 Bikemanbob. I can tell from the conventionally located DT shifters. From what I could see, (brakes, crank and seeming absence of DO eyelets), It could actually be an 82 or 83 PSV!
Great Peugeot find if it is.
Looks like it might be mostly intact/mostly original and maybe low mileage as the wheel and other reflectors are still on the bike. It's certainly worth a second look. More pics please, lowrentstranger......

Yeah my gut was telling me to do it, but Im weary of situations that seem too good to be true. Especially when they come from the internet. I want to believe this guy, but with how creative and charismatic craigslist scammers can be I'll belive it when I see it. I can't help but hope though.

As I said I'm fairly new to road bikes and bicycling in general so I'm not really sure on things I should look out for on the bike itself. Tips on things I should look out for so I don't end up paying him to throw away his junk?

Can't tell much from the postage stamp pics. However, spend some time looking through How Old Is My Bike? (http://www.mytenspeeds.com/My_TenSpeeds_1/FREE_SITE_VINTAGE/VINTAGE_1_Start.htm) and you will be able to figure out when your bike was made. The have a look through French Restoration Problems (http://www.mytenspeeds.com/My_TenSpeeds_1/Feature_Bicycles/Feature_Bicycles_France/French_Bicycle_Restoration_Problems/FRENCH_RESTORE_PROBLEMS_1_Start.htm) and you will be better prepared to avoid making mistakes restoring the bicycle if it is of French Origin.

Since you are relatively new to the interest of vintage bicycles, have a look at Bicycle Quality (http://www.mytenspeeds.com/My_TenSpeeds_1/FREE_SITE_1/FREE_SITE_6_BICYCLE_QUALITY.htm). There is a wealth of information there that will help you differentiate between entry, mid and top level bicycles. Know also that old road bikes are fragile and are often times slightly damaged. So too are components. Knowing what to look for and what to avoid are useful things to have tucked away in the pumpkin, Pumpkin...

Fork is chromed, so if it's a UO-8, it has been re-forked. Lugs are white, so it could be repainted, or something completely different. Saddle shape looks like a Brooks Pro.

Or as has been suggested it could be something a lot more modern.

Its probably and 82-83 PSV-ish with a 63cm frame not a 68.

I blew up the pics. Fork looks all chromed. Downtube shifters look conventional, not aero. Front caliper is side-pull. No discernible decals on seat tube, e.g. no checkers and no rainbow. No discernible decals on downtube, e.g. no stripes, no rainbow, I don't even see PEUGEOT. Some sort of decal on forward part of top tube. Crank looks vaguely Stronglight-ish. Brake levers are non-aero, look like gum hoods?

Any guess from these clues? I'm new to this, but am thinking the very plain white scheme w/ minimal decals suggests early 1980s? The sidepull brake - not sure (edit) - it could be a later addition. Later 1980s would be rainbow, 1970s would be checkers?

As I noted on my post, you can just make out from the pics items that you will find on an 82/83 PSV.
Brakes - looks to be Weinmanns (405s?) which IIRC, was what came with PSVs. The front brake routing (to the right of the bike) indicates at least that it's a midline to high model brakeset, which again points towrds a PSV or similar level model.
Crank - It looks like it could be a Stronglight 104bis, which was also standard (almost a signature crankset) on the PSV in the early 80's
Fork - Fully chromed fork. Can't make out what the crown's doing, but it should not slope as much as the 84 model.
I wish there was a pic or mention of what tubing the frame is made of, but SV980 would point it more towards a PSV, of course.
The white paint is of course what you'd expect on a PSV, and maybe the Peugeot decals were damaged or scratched off and those parts of the tube or most of the frame re-painted. There seems to be evidence of a black standing lion badge on the head tube in the pic, which what was on the 82/83 PSVs.
I guess we'll eventually find out what it really is as soon as the OP gets more info, but I'm really curious if we nailed it down.

....BTW, the reflectors on the bike was pretty much what was standard on early 80's (US) Peugeots.
Different brands use slightly different style, size, shape reflectors as the companies have different suppliers.

The long spoke reflectors suggest that it is an early-eighties model.
I would estimate the frame size to be smaller than previously suggested (about 60cm) and the presence of gum hoods without turkey wings leads me to believe that the chromed fork could be OEM, vs a service replacement. This would be indicative of a fairly high level Peugeot - possibly even a PSV as Chombi said - IF it is a Peugeot. (There is not much visible in the way of decals here to confirm it.)

Sorry guys deal didn't go though. I think it was just someone messing with me after all.
