Classic & Vintage - Anyone Here Have An Old Vintage 'Off Road Toad' Mountain Bike?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I believe these were made in the late '80s(?) and I think I read somewhere the name has recently been resurrected. They were made in Canada and I really wanted one. I wanted it for a silly reason - I have had 'Toad' as a nickname for as long as I can remember and wanted the bike because of the name and because I wanted a bike that nobody else had.
Well, I never got one. I check Ebay occasionally but have never seen one there either (doesn't mean there hasn't ever been one, though).
So, anyone here have one?

Off Road Toad was established by Rod Kirkham in 1986 out of Mountain & Beach Bicycles in Vancouver, BC.
The brand quickly gained a cult following and the frames were very sought after.
Rod quit producing the frames in 1993 and the brand has been dormant since.
After a long hiatus – we’re finally bringing the brand back using many of the pioneering designs that, while common today, were cutting edge back then – plus a few things we’ve been quietly working on.
Rod still owns Off Road Toad and although not involved with the day to day operations, is very much involved with the direction of the brand. Rod entrusted Michael Golinski and Mike Kloeppel to manufacture, market and sell the frames.
Michael’s background is as former co-owner/founder of Spot Brand and employee at Rocky Mountain, Syncros and Dekerf Cycle.
Mike’s background is as former employee at Control Tech and Raleigh USA.
Michael and Mike both wanted Toad frames back in the ’90’s and now have the opportunity to produce the Team Toad frames again, not only for themselves but for all of those other people that always lusted after owning a Toad back in the day.

They are very rare.
When I organized the 1st Old World MTB Championships in '09, one of the German participants came with one.

Though I know nothing about the TOAD bicycle, I have a friend on the west cost who collects them. As I recall, he has one or two tucked away and is always looking for another. As I understand it, the bikes fetch big dollars, these days.
Well, I never got one. I check Ebay occasionally but have never seen one there either (doesn't mean there hasn't ever been one, though).
If you are going to look on ebay, an occasional look will rarely work. Instead, save several searches, in different catagories, with different misspellings, with some word fragments, etc. Then ebay will let you know if something pops up.
I love learning about new Canadian bike makers and these look fantastic , I think I've got a modern steel MTB to covet...

That's an interesting design for the rear. It looks like you could switch out small parts and go from horizontal to verticle.

Has been sitting in my basement for over 5 years, really deserves better. I put a couple of pics up on Facebook recently. Have a look and contact me if you are interested. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Off-Road-Toad-Bicycles/292581198902 .

A Hodaka "Road Toad" motorcycle owner/fan might not appreciate the "pushbike" crowd stealing their bike's famous name....

Well I used to have one. Here's a link to a post on MTBR forum where I was asking about it. Lots of expertise over there on Toads and other old school rides. http://forums.mtbr.com/vintage-retro-classic/need-info-my-toad-94824.html
I converted it to a single speed and then it got stolen. Goddamn bicycle thieves.

Man, that was a beautiful frame. At least it's pretty unique so it may be hard for them to resell it?

Wow, cool frame! It has a hite-rite tab on the back of the seat tube.

and what looks like a frame pump "nipple" that would allow a pump to run down the seat stay?
Yep it had gorgeous brazing and neat little features like the hite rite and pump nipple (I never used either). I tried half heartedly to look for the bike, but never found it. It also had cool Bontrager switchblade forks and a Hammerhead combo stem/handlebar. From the drooling this bike got on the forums by aficionados of old school Mtn bikes I'm really pissed I don't still have this bike! Stolen about 6 years ago, so who knows where it is now. Based on the location, I kinda suspect some young punk stole it, had no idea of the value and now it's rusting away in a backyard somewhere. Maybe some knowledgeable dickhead got of ahold of it and sold it out of the region. Alas

I have a Toad sitting in my garage that gets used from time to time. My ride of choice is a Dekerf that I have had for 15 years or so, such a nice bike!

PICTURES.
I remember a MBA test of a TOAD bike that must have been around '96. Neither my friends nor I put it together that the price listed was for the frameset and it seemed like an amazing deal at the $1200 or whatever it was.
