Recreational & Family - My DIY milk crate child's bike seat

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was going to post some pictures of it here, but for some reason I can't load them. I made a little DIY guide if anyone else wants to make one:

I am almost always positive about ideas on here but I have to be honest. Commercially made kid seats are designed to be safe with wrap around sides around shoulders and head for extra protection. Your child may need that protection even if you are an excellent rider because things happen to bikers even if you do not make a mistake. Used bike kid carriers are readily available on this forum, Craig's List, eBay and if you drive around the neighborhood in the spring on trash night you are bound to find one free at the curb that some other kid has grown out of. Little kids are worth the extra margin of protection a commercial seat has I think. I recommend saving the innovation ideas for racks, panniers, mirrors, seats and everything else, but for toddler safety stick with the tried and true (and safety certified) solutions...

Sorry to not be encouraging about this...

I would have been happy to send you our old RhodeGear seat, but I have already given it away. Check Craig's List as a start and I bet for next to nothing you can pick one up that is a lot safer.

I do have to commend you for a clever idea, however!

I have been looking for a used child's seat for 2 months now, and continue too...this is what I'm using in the mean time. I've been checking the thrift store, craigslist and local used classifieds.

Great. I know the chances something will happen are pretty low, Probably the most likely thing is dropping the bike when you mount and dismount. Most of us have probably had at least one minor slip with these, and the shoulder and hear protection of a commercial seat does help..
