Classic & Vintage - Identifying approximate year of Cinelli Model B

I just discovered this 60cm Cinelli road bike sitting in a garage unused for decades. It was a single owner bike which I got from the original owners grandson. I think it is all original. It is shown in the pictures exactly the way I have found it. I am wondering what the approximate year of this bike is? Am I accurate in thinking very early 1960's? That's what is commonly referred to as a "grail bike". Really. Take good pictures of the drivetrain components and post them.

I'm going to go have a little winge over in the corner now. Sigh.

Do the brakes say 'Universal 61'? 61 refers to the year they came out. I think....

If your mechanicaly inclined remove one of the front hub lock nuts and flip it over...there's a date code.

Yeah, my size too. First thing, welcome to the forum Fortunefact. You just found one of the all time great bicycles. Don't do anything to it until you hear from the experts here.

I am not going to be touching anything. I think it is nicer displaying as-is with only a very basic wipe-down (with not even a cloth, just my finger)[to just simply remove the glory garage dust]

I am excited about this bike and I think its size (60cm seat tube c-c) would have been a lot less common at the time.

Tires are the only thing not original on the bike

I am new to the forum here but I own and operate a specialty bike shop here in Toronto. I deal with a lot of high-end 1980's road. I have been selling for years and have always sold locally.... very little ebay

I am going to find out more about the original owner as I am still in contact with his grandson. He told me his grandfather was a passionate cyclist all his life.

Something really fun that was included with the bike was some trophies and all of his grand fathers cycling clothing. I am certain that one of the trophies is for cycling but the other maybe not. It was a 6th place trophy for a German race on August 28th 1949 - 120km. The other I was told was for cycling but I am unsure. I will post some pictures of the trophies on here in a bit.

So, you are not, it seems, completely unaware of what you have here. Good. An incredible find, Cam. When you get a chance, please do post some good close ups of the components and details of the bike. It looks to be in amazing condition. Fantastic machine. Congrats on finding it. This would look cool on display, with his cycling kit and trophies, if you have the space in your shop.

Somebody's gotta ask: what's it doing in the bathroom?

I definitely have some good knowledge when it comes to classic road bikes. I have many, and have sold hundreds. I deal with mostly 1980's. I would just love to identify a specific date range in which this bike was built / is from.

Holy crap. The condition is absolutely spectacular. And personally I like the blood red over the blue of one that just sold for $5,600. Don't get too excited as that price is an anomaly. But then again, you never know.

As miamijim pointed out, your best bet for a date is on the lock nuts of the hubs. Otherwise, the best you could do is 1961-late 60s. Not many Bs were sold after the late 60s.

I take it back. I would make one change. Remove the reflectors from the spokes. Just a guess on my part but that stem looks later. As does the pump perhaps. Been customized with little red paint touches here and there. Are those Campy Tipo hubs? Or GS?

Good point. They look Tipo. Tipos started production in 1967(?). I thought they could be what I call "Medium Flange" (or Sportsman) hubs made in the early 60s. The difference is the Tipos have a more conical transition from the flange to the barrel where the Medium Flange is a more square transition.

Welcome to bikeforums Cam! I already made an offer on this one, it's a beaut. I think it's quite a bit later than '61, though. The early 60's Model B's came with Record components - "no record" hubs, Record derailleur and shifters, steel stem and bars, Nitor saddle and post, and record or Cinelli headset. All the components I see on this bike look quite a bit later. Someone made a comment on another post that B's tended to have lower spec'd components, which is true of the late 60's/early 70's bikes, but not of the earlier. Those brakes look like some kind of Altenburger to me, but I might be wrong. I'm also almost positive I see a Bloor Cycles decal on the seat-tube. The paint on this bike is amazing - I absolutely love that colour.
