Anybody w/ a desk job rerig their setup to stand at the desk rather than spend the day in a chair?
I did it this week, but I've only been in the office 3 of the 5 days. Coincidentally (?) a lower back problem tied to shoveling heavy wet slush last week has pretty much vanished by today w/o my having to dig out the book of stretches that I usually need to refer to for something like that.
Today my quads are feeling ... something but I don't know if it's the standing, or just that I commuted on my mtn bike yesterday and single speed today after almost 2 wks off the bike (that slush and the ice that followed it; time off the bike couldn't have helped my back any either) after 4 months on a geared cross bike.

my work just provided a desk with a powered raise and lower. i stand when my hip bothers me. i sit when i need more focus. my hip issue my be improving with it

i wish that were an option where i work. i have to resort to getting up every 15-20 minutes and walk around a bit, i can't stand sitting down for too long.

Anyone ever tried using an exercise ball as an office chair? One of our PTs swears by it for keeping the quads and core strong and for improving balance.

They started rolling out sit/stand stations here at work for 100 people. I signed up but didn't get mine yet. I did bring in shelves last year and raised up my monitors though (along with keyboard + mouse on a different height set of shelves). I think it works, but you must get the monitor height and keyboard/mouse height perfect and they are independent. That being said - when I started road cycling during lunch last year I did not want to be standing in the afternoons because the group I ride with would manage to keep my HR in zone 4/5 for an hour - I was drained by the time I got back to my desk. So in short. I can vouch for them, but be prepared to switch between sitting/standing in the same day.

Yep, I set up my office to be sit-stand early last year. Really helps avoid the afternoon slump, think clearly (less pressure on my brain) etc.

Here is something I posted out there on the internet in response to a blogger's evaluation of their standing desk experience. Your mileage may vary. I work at my standing desk 5-10% of my time now and that's on days when I have no evening fitness plans:

I quit my standing desk after a month. "sit all night" was definitely not my norm. I'm usually active; swimming or cycling three times a week after work (and more fun stuff on weekends). Always looking for ways to improve performance, strength and tone, I figured I'd give the standing desk a try. Once I started using a standing desk my energy levels and evening fitness routines dropped way off. It's not a workout but it's fatiguing enough during the day to really sap you. I didn't adjust my 'active-lifestyle' diet and ended up gaining over 5lbs. this summer.
I've been sitting again for two weeks, eating all day long, and I've already taken off the weight and have tons of energy in the evenings and weekend to workout and have fun.
If you're active and already fit (or at least non-sedentary away from the office), seriously consider how this may affect your lifestyle.
That's my story. I'm curious if anyone else has had similar experiences?"

I am using an exercise ball as a chair in the office....I can't sit on it all day yet, it is subtle but it works a lot of things. I find that is also is a focus aid..... I try to block time for big/critical tasks and the get on the ball while I am doing the tasks.......for whatever reason for me it helps...... (and I shut down bikeforums also :) )
