Classic & Vintage - Suntour cog question?

Have a 82' Miyata 610 that I would like to assemble a 17-20-24-28-34 freewheel for. Currently have 2 freewheels 14-28 and 14-34 with all the cogs I need EXCEPT a threaded 20. Did suntour make one? how hard to come by? Been thinking about welding the splined 20 I have onto the threaded 18 I won't need. Any other ideas? The gear range with the front triple should work for a few tours!

yea, good luck with that ???????? A good friend (30 year as a machinist) offered to make me one out of titanium=gratis, but welding the two together via "TIG" is faster.....

Which Suntour freewheel model do you have? The problem is that they changed body designs so frequently that most cogs didn't interchange, other than the largest two (splined) ones.

Don't just say "Winner" because there were many different versions of Winner over the years. If you have a "New Winner" that one at least was around for a while, and one body made 5, 6, and 7-speed freewheels....

I'm guessing that the freewheel is a Perfect based on two threaded cogs (OP has the 17 and needs a 20). I will check my extensive collection of Perfect cogs and see if I have one. If not a 20, would a 19 do?

The largest threaded cog for a Perfect or Pro Compe body I could find is an 18 tooth. You might go 15-18-22, 23 or 24-28-34.

I'm pretty sure you will need to go 15-18. I have never seen a Suntour with 17-20 most of these had first 2 cogs sized from 12 to 18. I don't believe I have ever seen a 20 as second on a Suntour.

I have a 19 and 21 threaded.

Heres a thought you could run use the 14-28 and change one of the front chainrings on the crank by one size to achieve basicaly the same gear ratio.

Just checking in, the freewheels are Perfect's. One is 14-17-20-24-28 and the other is 14-18-22-28-34. The outer 2 on each is threaded. I think with the front 52-47 (1/2 step) and 36 granny the 17-20-24-28-34 would give me more usable evenly spaced gears. Thanks to all who responded. Sheldon Brown wrote there where threaded cogs for the perfect up to 21 tooth. It seems with the stock118bcd crankset the smallest that will fit is the 36 granny.....

This a good instance when an Ultra spaced 6 speed will let you achieve what you hope for. I can space a Perfect with Ultra spacing (6 cogs in the space of 5). In this case you could run a 14-17-20-24-28-34. Let me know if I can help you out.
